US, with over 250 million people, won 35. (the biggest tally). if we had the same population, by rights, we would have won over 170 gold medals!! we rule! germany 06, here we come!

Australia will get their ass kicked in the world cup, but hey, at least we made it. It was amazing how we dominated possession and play in general, and yet throughout extra time it felt as though uruguay were gonna score. They were quite a bit better at creating space for opportunities up front, whereas we tended to just lock the ball up around midfield and flood our own offensive half. But in the end, we have 2 good keepers and 5-10 world class players other than them, which could be enough to at least win a few games come world cup time.

Goes back to 1950 when the Brazilians were even bigger favourites to win the world cup than they are for next year. Millions of Brazilians bought TV's just to watch the final, and Uruguay beat them.

Did Kewell play?

I suppose I cuold check. I think he's a quality player. He is Aussie yeah?

Australia might do well (in their terms), unless they draw England cus they'll lose against them as per normal. :p

I would like to see a hard group for England but not with Sweden in it, cus they'll play better (or be the group of death as there always is one). Cus England will be out in the group stages if they get shitty teams like USA or Ivory Coast. I was typing out a group I'd like to see England in. But every team has it's dangers I suppose. Cus the Ivory Coast have Drogba who ain't too bad. Even teams like USA, like Extra Cheese keeps saying might be a danger, cus alot of average players like McBride (if he ain't too old to play next year) and Beasley could cause a threat. So I suppose every team has it's chance. So this thread has just become a thread of current thoughts, rather than anything with substance.

Do you think the Swiss will get kicked out? That was some fudged up sh!t at the end of the match. I think if that was England with it's previous problems, they'd of already of been kicked out. But Seb Blatter is swiss ain't he? Hmmmmmm, I suppose he might distance himself form the investigation, but I dunno has the powers to make the choice? Only him?

Football, football here we go :D I love it!!!!

Did Kewell play?

Yeah. He started on the bench came on at the half hour mark because Popovic got carded and we couldn't afford to have an enforcing defender on yellow.

He had an immediate impact on the left wing, the Uruguayans couldn't deal with his speed and agility. The only goal of the game was due to him pretty much.

FIFA seeds eight teams for World Cup

World Cup 2006

Associated Press

12/6/2005 8:38:30 AM

LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) - The Netherlands was left out of the top seedings for Friday's World Cup soccer draw and could end up in the same group as perennial rival Germany or defending champion Brazil.

The omission of the world's third-ranked team was the biggest surprise during Tuesday's announcement of the seedings. Mexico and Spain were the only teams yet to win the World Cup that were picked for the top eight, which also included host Germany, Brazil, England, France, Argentina and Italy.

Germany and Brazil were automatically seeded for Friday's draw and will head groups A and F, allowing the powerhouses to play in Berlin, Munich and Dortmund, the three biggest stadiums.

Seeded teams are each placed in their own first-round groups, meaning the heavyweights are kept apart in the early stages.

Jim Brown, FIFA's director of competitions, said ''economic factors'' played a leading role in putting the defending champion and the host team at the biggest arenas.

England was happy to be among the seeded teams after it was picked to play Argentina, Nigeria and Sweden in the first round at the 2002 World Cup.

''This is a big boost but, when the tournament starts, we must show on the pitch why we have been seeded,'' England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson told the English federation website.

For Brazil, which is going for its sixth championship, first-round opponents matter little.

''I don't have any preference,'' Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos said. ''I have already participated in two World Cups and I did play against all teams. So, I don't know and I don't have any preference.''

The Netherlands had been lobbying for a top seeding but its non-qualification for the World Cup three years ago made sure it fell short. It lost to Brazil in the semifinals in a penalty shootout at France 1998.

FIFA based its seedings on results at the last two World Cups and the world rankings of the past three years.

Based on that rule, Brazil topped the standings with 64 points, ahead of England with 51, Spain with 50 and Germany with 48. The fifth-ranked team was Mexico with 47, followed by France with 46 and Argentina and Italy tied in seventh with 44 points.

The United States fell just short of the top eight with 43 points, while the Dutch were well back with 38.

The Netherlands is a two-time runner-up and is best known for its showing in Germany at the 1974 World Cup, where it lost to the hosts in the final 2-1.

Spain, a perennial underachiever, qualified through the European playoffs. Mexico was runner-up behind the United States in CONCACAF, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean. The Czechs, ranked second in the world, failed to qualify for the previous three World Cups and never had hopes of making the top seeds.

The draw was also set up to prevent teams from the same continent landing in the same group. Europe, with 14 of the 32 teams, is the exception. But no more than two European teams will be paired in the same group.

The field has four teams each from South America, Asia and the CONCACAF region and five from Africa. Australia represents Oceania.

Under a complicated decision, Serbia and Montenegro will be in a special pot at Friday's draw and will be in a group with either Brazil, Argentina or Mexico to avoid the possibility of a group with three European teams.

In other news, FIFA announced the winner of next year's World Cup will earn 24.5 million Swiss francs ($21.7 million Cdn).

Each team will be guaranteed at least two million Swiss francs ($1.77 million Cdn) per group game, assuring each team a minimum of at least six million Swiss francs ($5.3 million Cdn).

FIFA will also pay business class air tickets for the teams to come to the finals and will pay up to 400 Swiss francs ($353 Cdn) per day for hotel costs.

Each qualifier also will be given one million Swiss francs ($883,950 Cdn) to cover the cost of preparations.

Not an easy draw for your lot but not the hardest group considering you could have for example been paired with Argentina and Holland.

Italy and the Cech's should make it in the end. It depends on how motivated our team is and whether the Cech's are anywhere near their top form (they haven't been in the qualifiers).

I haven't seen the US play for a long time so I have no clue how good the team is now but I reckon that on paper you are least favourite to go through in our group because apparently Ghana is rated pretty highly at the moment (Essien - Appiah in midfield... hmmmmm).

If im not mistaken the U.S. is number 8 in the world rankings....there pretty damn good, and very young, the US probably has the best young class of players in the world, poving that this year they probably will make it past the fist game then probably lose to Italy, although Italy has looked shaky from time to time, the US could get lucky and pull something off there. Then next world cup US should be a strong contender, hopefully

Brasil 's group will make nice games. I mean, Japan is strange. They lost to some shit teams. But when they play against us it seems they gain some extra motivation (I think its because of Zico). Australia..well, I dont remember so many games against them but I remember they kicked us out of Confederations Cup a few years ago ......... and finally Croatia........They dont have the same power that they had in '98 but they're still a dangerous team.

Well, as a fanatic and confident supporter, I'll make my predictions about Brasil's games:

Brasil 4 x 1 Japan
Brasil 3 x 0 Australia
Brasil 2 x 0 Croatia

Its a wednesday, the MLS doesnt start until april and its only a couple of months away from the world cup so maybe both teams might have as close a world cup roster as they're going to have. It would be huge. Everyone in the world would recognize us as a soccer power. Come on, America. Jump on the bandwagon, and lets go stick it to those filthy foreigners.” Lovely, just lovely. I'm only worried about Ghana right now cuz they're underrated and they're the best african team in the tournament. I hope the U.S. doesnt take them lightly and have a let down. if they prepare for Ghana like they would for Italy and the czechs then the U.S. gets out the group with no problem.

C'est pas grave, I will root for them anyway ...

This week I applied for tickets to the sweden - paraguay game and also for the final.

Tickets for the final are something like 250 UsD. Both games in Berlin. Hope I survive the ballot in january. I really want to go.

I'd like to know how's your expectations about the World Cup next year.

I think it's anybodys game. I'm always pulling for Germany, but I believe they're still in the rebuilding stage.

Oh, and speaking of Americans not liking soccer....Jim Rome can take his stance on hockey and soccer and shove it right up his repetitive, has-been a$$. Ahem :p

Hello folks!!!
I kinda ressurected this thread cause today we had / are having some friendship games and cause we are very near to World Cup (not that near but still near)

Well, i hated Brasil's performance against Russia. A poor 1-0 is not enough to me. But I gave them a break cause the field was horrrible and the weather was fucking cold (-10ºC)

Here's the full list of the games:

Korea Republic 1:0 Angola
Iran 3:2 Costa Rica
Russia 0:1 Brazil
Tunisia - Serbia and Montenegro
USA - Poland
Turkey - Czech Republic
Croatia - Argentina
Republic of Ireland - Sweden
Netherlands - Ecuador
Saudi Arabia - Portugal
Wales - Paraguay
Scotland - Switzerland
France - Slovakia
Italy - Germany
England - Uruguay
Spain - Côte d’Ivoire
Mexico - Ghana (2-March)

Nice victory. I wish i could have whatched this game. Btw, I think Itally x Germany was a good game too. Italy just smashed them. 4 - 1 is a very large score.

2-0 within seven minutes, 4-0 in the second half and then the players started to get substituted in order to rest them for next weekend, which is too bad but understandable.

I reckon we could have gotten a larger score from them if the team kept going at them at 100% strength.

We were missing some key players too and performed marvelously despite that.

I'm starting to get mildly optimistic after this and the 3-1 against Holland... :)

You better do this. Italy is always a strong team.
