View Full Version : Beasties in Kerrang!
Feel Alright!

I now forgive Kerrang! for being largely rubbish! This week they have a double page feature called "Where To Start With... Beastie Boys". There's a big B&W picture of the band (LTI era) on the left and the other side talks a bit about each album - they're all covered apart from HN. They also have a list of songs they'd use to make a Beastie Boys mixtape which has some interesting choices on it and a bit of writing about each song, and a little paragraph where a guy from Lostprophets talks about them.
Sadly, tomorrow is the last day you can buy it. However, I'm going to buy a copy and although I can't scan the stuff, I'll type up the writing if you want.

I've got scans man, just need to make em smaller. I'll get them up soon, nice one on bringing this up. It's a decent little article.

It's a pretty cool article and last week they had a review of sold gold hits too.

I wouldn't have got round to it had you not started the thread, so it's no problem.
But yeah, I think it's a good article. Personally I can't seperate the albums, but its a fair view, and it's a decent selection of tracks covering most the styles.
Also theres a bit in K! where a few of the critics note what albums they're playing at the moment, and someone had Paul's Boutique with the comments 'because the Beasties music only makes sense on the original albums', clearly not a Solid Gold Hits fan!

I didn't really agree with some of their views of the albums but some of the time (like with the TT5B pgph, to an extent) they were spot on. And I'm glad they picked Egg Raid On Mojo.
That's an interesting thing about the critic - he/she seems to be being quite extreme about the songs not making sense out of context, because it's easy to get into the band via The Sounds of Science. I don't know about SGH, however.. the jury's out for me on the CD, but the DVD has definitely made me view songs like Pass The Mic in a more positive light for some reason.

Thanks for the scans Dave!
They didn't give a write up to HN specifically...but did include blurbs on 3 tracks from it.
I'm also disappointed in one word they label it "Avoid" and then go on to say all of their albums are worth your money. That's a contradiction.

Big up to dave790! Thanks for the scan. (y)
Okay, I saw that there was a list of songs for the "Ultimate Beasties Mix" so I wanna know why the article didn't mention "Hello Nasty"? What's up with that? That should be an essential purchase too. I mean, c'mon that album has got loads of classics on it... some already named... "Three MC's And One DJ", "Body Movin'", "Super Disco Breakin'"...and not to forget the beloved song "Intergalactic"! Oh! and then there's Yauch's "I Don't Know". Now THAT'S my joint! (y)

Yeah, but I think those are the headings every week. I see what you're saying, but at least the writer notes that all the albums are worht your money, even if TT5B is at the back of the queue! Most groups they cover in that section always have an avoid, and the album is basically slaughtered, so I see it as more of a positive thing.
Anyway your welcome for the scans.

That's interesting...thanks for the clarification then. I didn't realize they always have an album classified as "Avoid". That does make it seem more of a positive.
I was listening to Rhyme The Rhyme Well this evening....and damn that's a good track!

Couple of weeks back they had the "where to start with Bad Brains". Yauch was saying how great they were in the article. It was pretty groovy. It had this cool little pic of him too
