Scuffles have broken out after about 5,000 people, some yelling racist chants, converged on Sydney's Cronulla Beach amid fears of more violence there.
Two men of middle eastern appearance were seen being pursued and attacked as they tried to flee the crowd.
One of them was later escorted away by police, with blood streaming from his brow. As the second man fled, his short was torn by an angry group pursuing him on foot.
Earlier, a third man was also seen fleeing from a gang running after him.
Police have been forced to stop traffic on Elouera Road, which runs along the foreshore, as the crowd, also chanting pro-Australian slogans, spilled on to the roadway.
At least one man had been arrested over the unrest at Cronulla, Macquarie Radio reported.
Two men chased by the crowd were being protected by police who had moved in on Northies Hotel, on the foreshore, where at least one had sought refuge, it said.
Broken beer bottles scattered Elouera Road, with many in the crowd drinking heavily.
Mounted police and other units are maintaining a heavy presence at the beach after two rival groups used text messages to urge attacks on each other.
Some of the text messages encouraged people to carry out vigilante style attacks, and some message had racial undertones.
One of the messages had urged "Aussies" to take revenge against "Lebs and wogs". Another urged locals to rally at point on the beach to take retaliation against "middle eastern" gangs.
As the crowd moved along the beach and foreshore area, one man on the back of a ute began to shout "No more Lebs" - a chant picked up by the group around him.
Others in the crowd, carrying Australian flags and dressed in Australian shirts, yelled "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie ... Oi, Oi, Oi".

Honestly...during my travels...I've noticed that the only people louder (and more annoying) than the typical loud americans...were the loud and rowdy Australians. They're like Texans...only thinner.
Sure I'm generalizing...but it's based on experience.

I wonder if they realise they could be breeding more terrorists by doing this. People who had no problem with Australia may now start to hate it with a passion.

I saw an interesting conversation about this on the TV. Apparently it is used non-offensively as slang for an ethnic minority, traditonally greeks etc. Hence the rather poor film "Wogboy" about a "dole-scum bludger" or some such.
But really, back to the main point of this thread - anyone who thinks the antipodes are a paragon of multi-ethnic virtue needs to go watch Romper Stomper again.

TV station then blew it out of proportion and the next thing you know...
Same thing happened in Paris. It seems like these incidents are just waiting to blow. The fact that Australia is an ally of the US in Iraq and the Bali bombs no doubt do not help things at all.

Does this really surprise anyone? I mean this sort of rioting and race tension happens a hell of a lot in Sydney, I mean its parodied in fat pizza (a tv show), and it also happens alot between the aboriginals and the police (ie the redfern riots). Thank god it doesnt happen much elsewhere in the country.

To be honest... I know this is going to sound awful, and I admit it is a broad sweeping generalisation, but my overall impression of Australians is that once you get away from the metropolitan areas - and those metropolitan areas are fairly small - that actually it is a country full of rednecks. I know that's unfair to the (I suppose) many people that aren't, but again, it's just my general impression. Kind of like how most Americans you meet from one coast or the other are OK, but the ones from the middle are a little scary.

i wouldn't say those from metropolitan areas are more tolerant than those from the country. in this case, it was people from the city that were the main culprits. and look at a regional place like tasmania; racism is practically a non-issue.

Fair enough. I can't pretend to know very much about it. I've never been there, and most of the Autralians I've met here in London have generally been good fun, if not terribly sophisticated, but seem like basically good people. Mostly that overall impression I have comes from stories told to me by two different friends of mine (who don't know eachother) who each lived for a few years in Australia, one in Perth and one in Sydney. So admittedly mine isn't the most informed opinion.

Isn't that because there isnt as much of an ethnic mix in Tasmania? I mean I wouldnt know because I only visited there very briefly, but thats the impression that I get.

I meant small compared with, say, a megalopolis like Wash-Philly-NY-Boston, or London-Birmingham-Manchester, not strictly the percentage of population. But I understand what you're saying.

In essence, you implied most Australians live outside metropolitan areas. Just thought I'd set the record straight on that.
While I'm here (and even though it's an irrelevant claim on your part), cities like Sydney and Melbourne where a huge percentage of the Australian population live dwarf places like Philly, Birmingham and Manchester.

Its only when people start accentuating differences rather than celebrating similarities that the shit hits the fan...
And yeah Ms Peachy the stats don't lie. Out of 4.9 million people in the state of Victoria (of 20 million in Australia), about 3.5 million live in Melbourne (compared with 1 million for birmingham, 500,000 for manchester, and 1.5 for philadelphia), 300,000 in geelong, and about 100,000 each in bendigo, ballarat and la trobe city.

Look. I'm not disputing numbers. All's I'm trying to say, in the politest way possible, is that when I think of Australians in a very generalised way, the image that springs to mind is hardly that of a culture of cool, sophisticated urbanites. For better or for worse.

here's some thoughts (not mine) that i found interesting....
My best mate is croation (and hes now a cop), but the first thing I noticed about him and his family when they came here were how they were glued to American tv and culture.. The mum watches bold and the beautiful, my mate loves all those cheesey van-dam and other action movies and pop culture and the dad was glued to all those channel 10 car shows. They are very hard working people (way more than me) but its like they come here with the notion that Australia is a way more advanced place than where they were from because it has ties with America. Remember these people come from war torn countries.
They respect things like power because that helps you survive in their old environment. But the thing is, over here, technology rules. All those values they bring over are no longer really needed because we have progressed beyond war in our own country (maybe). They havent quite 'chilled out' yet. They are muslim, but dont really practice the religion that seriously any more. Unlike other families which may still take it quite seriously.
And the other thing you see is all these people (including our new immigrants) looking up to american pop culture on telly here like its supposed to be the pinnacle of human achievement or something... It really isnt.. I watched the movie 'you got served' which is an over hyped MTV breakdancing movie and it shows all these poor black people in shitty neighbourhoods doing their thing (dancing) just to try and survive.. It really doesnt relate to most Aussies at all. Seriously. Its just 'cool' because its hyped on telly with an MTV hiphop music backdrop and skanky chicks. We dont have a gun problem here in australia like they do. We dont have to worry too much about drive bys... Why the fuck do we wanna look up to their shitty non-progressive ways for? Its crap.
I went to garden city the other day to the main surf shop expecting to hear some punk music playing in a surf shop.. What did I hear? Rnb.. WTF.. Rnb in a surfshop. People are just going stupid here. I blame it allllllll on telly here. Radio.. etc. We suck americas cock.
