How come sometimes your elections are in June and sometimes they're in January?

That's weird. You should know that you're hard enough to keep track of as it is.

minority government. parliamentary system. motion of non-confidence. multiple opposition parties. scandal. democracy.

it's pretty interesting stuff, canadian politics.

the election can technically be any day of the year, except statutory holidays, me thinks.

Stephen Harper kinda looks like the guy that cut his leg off in SAW.

Parliament calls elections, and technically they can call it whenever they feel like it (there never is a set date like in the United States, which is always the first Tuesday of November every four years).

Different system of government, amigo.

if you don't mind, who'd you vote for?

i'm thinking NDP or, strategically, Liberals...

since I work for the devilish and environmentally damaging mining industry I normally vote Green just so me and my conscience can sleep at night

but I voted NDP last night because our riding has been conservative the last three times in a row and the NDP dude was the only one with a chance of booting them out, but sadly we lost by 500ish votes

Jack Layton is ok in my books regardless
shiniest apple in the bunch really

oh, funny thing that happened during voting
my parents like voting en masse and bringing a posse with them to the polling location, so they forced my friend and I to wait and go with them last night.
anyways, my friend(who happens to have a gay brother) forgot her voting card and thats fine and all, but they kept sending her to the wrong station and makin her all frusterated. So my mom went on this huge rant in the church foyer (im always creeped out about voting in churches too) about how "its a conservative conspiracy, they find out who has gay family members and they bribe the polling agents to screw them around so they get so fed up that they leave before getting to place a vote against the conservatives, ITS ALL A PLAN I TELL YA"
she did this all in jest and it was fucking hilarious and Im surprised we didnt get beaten with bible belt buckles in the parking lot

Here in 'Merica we have a D.C. statehood Green Party. A crazy conflageration of the already existing DC Statehood party and the DC Greens. In Massachusetts they have Rainbow Greens.

Canada should make, like... like an anti Statehood Green party or something.

I bet even some of the BQs would vote for that.

funny how canadians mocked the shit out of the US for putting a conservative fuck in office like Bush...

then turn around and do the same thing....

"Relations with the Bush administration could improve under a Harper government, as his ideology runs along the same lines of many U.S. Republicans.

Harper has said he would reconsider a U.S. missile defense scheme rejected by the current Liberal government of Martin. He also said he wanted to move beyond the Kyoto global warming debate by establishing different environmental controls, spend more on the Canadian military, expand its peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and Haiti and tighten security along the border with the United States in an effort to prevent terrorists and guns from crossing the frontier."

hahahaa....fuckin canadians.

^he hasn't dropped out yet, he has only called the governor general and said he plans to resign. first, he must hand over power to the devil (ha ha), and then the liberal party will get together, and will elect the party leader (it's called a leadership convention: explanation 1 (http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=A1ARTA0004588), explanation 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leadership_convention)).

Harper might think like a Republican, but with a minority government there's no way his crazy right-wing agenda is going to fly. He can spend all the time he wants "reconsidering" missile defense and gay marriage, but he's got to know that Canadians aren't going to accept any turnarounds on those issues.

I actually think this might be good for the country. We'll see if the Liberals are worth their salt when they try dealing with being the Opposition, and if they can stump Conservative legislation by compromising with the Bloc and/or NDP we just might see some real democracy here.

In federal elections, Canada is divided up into ridings. We get the opportunity to vote for an MP (Member of Parliament) who represents each riding, which results in parties getting a certain number of seats (there's 308 seats up for grabs).

This time around, the Conservatives won the most seats, so technically Canada elected the Conservative Party to form a new government (since Harper is their party's leader, he gets to be the Prime Minister).

Technically, only the people living in the Calgary-Southwest riding (where Harper resides) DIRECTLY elected Harper.

I think this may be what CJM is getting at when he says you don't know what you're talking about. Maybe.

D Raay,
Thanks for proving what's wrong with public education today.
Your math sucks.

based on your own numbers, the total votes from 1992 was 103,751,662, Clinton's vote total would be .43 or 43%

and the total votes from 1996 was 91,273,294 and Clintons vote total would be .4994 of that, or 49.9%

Now how can 43% and 49% be greater than 50%

It appears YOU are the one who is quite wrong.
:D

Clinton never won a majority of the vote i.e. >50%, as my original post stated.

The majority voted for OTHER candidates.

Feel free to be a man and admit you are wrong.
