This thread works quite well on another forum I use which means it'll probably fall flat on its virtual face here but I'll kick it off.
The Rakes. London Astoria, 2/2/06
About the 3rd time I have seen The Rakes who are a great and criminally underated band. They were supported by Duels and White Rose Movement who were quite impressive but Alan et al totally stole the show. They played about 8 tracks of their album Capture/Release and a couple of new ones which sounded great. Only downside was potentially the amount of beer-boys down the front who were getting a little rowdy but otherwise a top night. 8/10.
I saw Supergrass last night at a small club and they totally rocked it. Man, they are good live.
9.9 out of 10 cause nobody's perfect

I was working the beer tent at a Stones concert last summer...those fellas can rock the house pretty darn well for senior citizens.
Our Lady Peace opened. Leading up to the concert I had heard that OLP sucked live but they sounded great.
8/10 (because I couldn't drink booze on account of work and all)

Dirty Pretty Things, The Luminaire, Kilburn 21/02/06
My sister's boyfriend won tickets to this secret gig last night, so took me along as she was not bothered. DPT are Carl and Gary (ex of the Libertines) new band, along with Didz (Cooper Temple Clause) and Anthony Rossamundo. Great little gig, only 100 winners and friends and family of the band. It was their first UK gig and they played for about an hour and threw in 3 Libs songs (I get along, France and Death on the Stairs). If you get a chance to see them, go along. Only downside is that you do get a lot of 'OMG Carl is so buff' fab girls, and sadly, I think sometimes Carl's vocals aren't as strong as they should be. 7/10

Kings of Leon + The Mess Hall + The Subways
Subways opened. They were average, some songs were ok. I dont like rock and roll queen. Its boring. 5/10
The Mess Hall were good, but every song sounded like the streets "fit but dont you know it", a result of them being a two piece. Seen them a few times before, so no suprise value. 6/10
Kings of Leon were great, intense crowd, solid set, their intro music was the theme from 2001 space oddessy, cocky barstards (y) 8/10

trailerprincess, I know a huge bunch from the BRMC-forum who'd be so jealous of you now!
I saw Big Star last Sunday.
I had maybe too high expectations of them, but even their entrance was an anti-climax. They hadn't rehearsed the new stuff properly so Alex had to have the lyrics taped to the pillar in front of him (yeah the venue is inside a mountain so they have these ironpillars all over, including the stage). Yeah they played some old classics, started of with the 70's show title and did September Gurls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lETyAbzRgwY), Thirteen and Thank you friends, the guitarist was awesome and they had Ken Posie with them, but it didn't keep me from yawning a couple of times. Pity. I really wished they'd kicked ass.

Yesterday I was supposed to go to see Robert Johnson and the Punchdrunks at their record release party (yeah he's really called that). They used to play very 60's type Link Wray-y surf guitar music, but then last year they became a duo and Robert got totally into this new wave of electro, so I don't know what they'd sound like now.
Then my friend called that her son had a gig at this really small bar in the city. He has four different bands, plays different instruments in each of them and one of them is with his father. This one was the jazzy one, Diskodrift (http://www.diskodrift.tk/) where he plays drums, otherwise there's only bass and a saxophone. He's a good drummer, as good as a 16-year old can, but the bassplayer needs to practise a lot if he keeps singing and playing at the same time. They sounded very Captain Beefheart-y, jazzy punk. It was great to see such (un)pretentious gig in such a small place (about the size of my living room) with just friends and parents and a couple who just happened to be there. And great to see so young kids into other music than straight rock'n'roll.

Ugh, I saw them last year. Was awful. They weren't terrible, but the opener was some bluegrass duo who were completely out of place, the crowd was the worst I'd ever been in and the tickets were overpriced (although not nearly as much as yours. 70 bucks, christ). 3/10

It was pretty good, they are fantastical live, but I wasn't in the right mood for most of the gig, some pissed up scouser was dancing like a crazy man rubbing his workmans bum against me, that livened me up a bit and I started to enjoy it more.

Three support acts played: the 1990's, Odeon Beat Club and The View, babyshambles took an age to get onstage (they didnt bounce on till about 10.50pm). The shows itself was fantastic, with Up the Bracket getting an airing (which made the crowd go apeshit). This is by far the best show I've ever been to. It was the second time I've seen them live. I saw them earlier in April 2005 and they rocked then also. They played alot of new material from their forthcoming album which was simply amazing. Whoever opened for them sucked at first then somewhat grew on me but I still couldn't wait for them to be finished. Some chick with frizzy hair was their lead singer. When I really think about it, they pretty much blew.

Yesterday, even tho I was pretty ill, I went to see TSOOL (again!), wouldn't miss them for the world!
I placed myself in front of Ian, love to watch him twirl, we do share birthdays and he has a very nice behind ;) :)
I ended up right at the front, right in the middle! right in front of Frans from Fireside, who'd jumped in while Kalle was becoming a father! He's the one who took the pics of me with Judah Bauer and Russell Simins from Blues Explosion once at Mondo! It was great to see him play, it's been a while. Fireside haven't played live for ages and I've only bumped into Frans when he's been working at Södra Teatern or Kägelbanan.
My camera seems to be total crap to take gig pics, but it's great to film with! Here's Instant Repeater 99 (http://www.youtube.com/v/E2j9u3KJRd4), Ebbot climbed to the audience, right on top of me! As I had a fix focus on three meters I tried to keep the camera as far back as possible, in the end he kissed a girl behind me!
They played loads of old hits, some from the "obscure collection" and finished off with Motörhead's Ace of Spades!
Pity I ran out of memory, so here's (http://www.youtube.com/v/xAw9_jHiazs) just a little snippet!

Manic/Hot Puppies/Crimea - Kings College, London Tues 14/3
Manic were absolutely terrible. Pure self-indulgent tripe. Hot Puppies were quite good - the female lead singer and keyboard player were fab but the rest of the band looked a bit awkward. Crimea were ok- i had not heard anything by them before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I think they want to sound like Editors or even Interpol but they don't. Not the worst I have seen but not memorable at all 6/10

Last Tuesday - Kid Harpoon/Pigeon Detectives and The Holloways, 100 Club, London
Kid Harpoon was fabulous - he looks about 12 years old and it's him and his guitar doing some nice acoustic stuff. Then Pigeon Detectives came on who were from Leeds - they were alright considering the absolutely shite band name. Then finally The Holloways who have just signed a six album deal - I really like them for their energy. They are not especially original - i.e. the sound like a less edgy Libertines but good fun nonetheless 7/10

An Evening with Patrick Wolf - UCL Bloomsbury Theatre, last night
Picture the scene - 400 capacity theatre. 3 violinists, a celloist, man with a laptop, a trumpist, a backing singer and the glorious Patrick Wolf in charge of proceedings playing piano, violin, guitar and percussion. I managed to get a ticket to this off a girl from another forum I use and I am so glad I made the decision to go. This was by far and away the best ' gig' I have ever been to. The evening was split into two halves, in the first, Patrick played stuff from his first two albums 9The Libertine /Teignmouth /Wolf Song /Ghost Song /The Childcatcher /Demolition/Wind in the Wires /Eulogy/To The Lighthouse) Then there was an actual interval and then he came back and performed tracks from this upcoming album ' The Magic Position' for the first time ever. The title track is so upliftingly fabulous for a start, and the rest of the new tracks, one called Augustine, The Secret Garden, Accident and Emergency, Lets Go Get Lost, the Bluebells, The Stars (to name a few) were just fantastic. He is super gracious and charming and passionate and the music is simply brilliant. I was in tears about 4 times throughout his set - the man oozes talent. if you ever ever get a chance to see him, please do. He's amazing. 10/10

A couple of weeks ago, Cazals at Islington Academy - about the 6th time I have seen them and they were really good this night. Played some new material which went down a treat. I was right at the front and got some lovely injuries as a souvenir but it was all good.
Last Friday, The Rakes at Shepherds Bush Empire 6.5/10
I don't think it was the best show of theirs I have seen. The performances were fine, I think the venue lacked atmosphere though which is a shame. Other people I was with that it was brilliant but I felt it was just a bit blah. Young Knives who were supporting were pretty good though.

Jerry Douglas
He was on dobro guitar with a fiddle player (Gabe Withcher), standup-bass (Todd Parks), drums (Doug Belote), and accompanying guitarist (Guthrie Trapp).
Trapp and Withcher were particularly great. Damn.
Amazing set. They'd swing between bluegrass and jazz and much of it was improvised. Because of that improvisation, it was so enjoyable to watch their interactions, the way Trapp and Withcher read the way the music was progressing, where Jerry or the soloist wanted to take it. Several pieces, they'd never played together before and you could see that they were pleased when they realized that it was working and that it was good.
It was obvious that they were enjoying themselves despite the drunk guy in the crowd who was, obviously, a fan, but who encouraged them, loudly, to do stuff like "get er played" and "just kick it aht." I think they enjoyed playing the small venue--there were bunches of times when they'd make and hold eye contact, directly, and that was very cool.

I've been to a few while the board was gone.
On April 25th I went to see the Backyard Babies. They played quite a lot of stuff from their new album that I hadn't heard yet, so there was several unfamiliar tracks. Not that they differed that much from their old usual stuff...
Dregen sang more than ever before. They tried hard, but maybe cause I wasn't at the front (as usual) and was quite tired so I didn't enjoy them as much as all the times before.
But I did buy their new album on vinyl and the new autobiography Blood Sweat and fools (http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/9364/bbabies4am.jpg).
Waterboys on the 1st of May at Cirkus.
Didn't have that high expectations, so was a bit positively surprised. My favourite song of the '80's (Whole of the moon) lost an awful lot without the arrangements, but an added bonus on it was that Mike started singing Everyday People (Sly and the Family Stone number) during it. All the other older stuff they played were magnificent. Some of the stuff was quite yawny, and the choise of backing musicians wasn't that great, especially the keyboard played was a bit too much (I think I'll blame him for ruining WOTM....) so I think I'll give the gig 6 out of 10.
Flaming Lips 2nd of May at Cirkus.
Party time! for serious people!
If you don't come out from a Flaming Lips concert with a big smile on your face you're dead! Huge balloons, confetti, streamers, strobe lights, Santa Clauses dancing on the right hand side, aliens to the left! And She don't use jelly! I think Wayne lost a little bit on trying to make people to cheer even more (if that was possible) by saying several times the concert was being filmed. And I wish they hadn't finished with a Black Sabbath song...
8/10
And I think I've finally (after over a year) learned to take proper gig pics with my camera... :o but it isn't fast enough... Here's some pics:

Sigur Ros last week. It was the same basic show as last year with a better set list. I took a friend who didn't know them and it was fun to see the reaction. I love the band, but more than that I love their fans. They listen hard and get into it. I thought the band played great. I love the drummer.
There were a few naughty crowd moments. During a quiet, dramatic moment, someone in the crowd yelled "Freebird" and I laughed hard. I do believe that the lead singer also started to crack up.
Sigur Ros reminds me of early Pink Floyd, but if I said that out loud, their fans would be horrified.

Absolutely blinding. Karen was on tremendous form and looked fabulous. Nick and Brain could almost not be there because she is so dominanting but they also were brilliant. LIghting and stage set was also superb and worked really well. My only criticism would be that they came off a little distant, there was not much interaction with the crowd but all in all fabulous.Set list was Gold Lion, Pin, Honeybear, Way Out, Black Tongue, Phenomena, Down Boy, Cheated Hearts, Mysteries, Art Star, Y Control, Turn Into. As Led Zeppelin are gonna be in town tomorrow accepting the Polar Music Price there's been loads of Zep-themed happenings. Rabbit Fighter Club at Mosebacke has had gigs every night for a week and last night was my big favourites Captain Murphy. They haven't played in Stockholm for ages (hardly anywhere else for that matter), they've been busy recording their new album. So of course they played loads of stuff from that. It's gonna take a few listens to get used to those, they weren't quite as boogie as the old stuff. They had Magic Gunnarsson (plays everywhere good sax is needed, mainly in the Solution, but also with the Doits, Thunder Express etc) playing saxophone on a new tracks and my would I like to grab that and take home with me! (the saxophone that is, last summer I would've even taken the player....).
Captain Murphy were supported by Dollhouse and actually they blew the house down! The singer had almost the charms of Howlin' Pelle and he could make the whole audience squat down during one song! Am definitively gonna see them again!
8/10 for Dollhouse
7/10 for Captain Murphy (a couple of years ago their gig at the same place got into my Top 10 gigs of the year so maybe I was expecting too much....)

Popaganda (http://www.popaganda.se/) free festival at the university, first day:
I'm from Barcelona: huge amount of people singing absolutely lovely summer tunes, quite a lot like Polyphonic Spree, but no cloaks, rather raids to the drift store to find the ugliest clothes :D
Just love them!
Tunng: from UK, sounding like Simon and Garfunkel. OK for a while
Henrik Berggren: singer from Broder Daniel trying to make it on his own. Never could stand his voice so him alone was just terrible, went indoors to the university to get away from the rain and cold.
Mew: Danish Sigur Ros wannabe's. First I was near the front, but people around me were talking too much so I went to buy a langos to warm my hands and it sounded much better from further away, even tho the wind blew away some of the sounds.
Today would be the second day, but my foot hurts too much (spraining your ankle turns back on you every now and then) and the weather's really bad and there's actually just one band that I was interested in so ain't gonna bother. Much more to see tomorrow.

Popaganda (http://www.popaganda.se/) third day Saturday:
Andreas Mattsson, former lead singer of Popsicle. Making sweet popmusic again, but still seems shy on stage. Really good backing musicians tho.
Elf Power; weak Postal Service copy.
Hello Saferide, nice indeed!
the Whitest Boy Alive, Erland Oye from Kings of Convenience with a "disco"side project, sounded a lot like Röyksopp, but more trashy. Very good dancemusic! Fun fun fun! Girls from Cat5 (Sak check out!) came on stage as well to sing their big hit I'm too sexy for my jeans.
Mapei & Up Hygh, great funky hip hop!
Josh Ritter, played instead of the Concretes, who had to pull out because of illness. He was supposed to play at Berns for 1000 people, but rather played for free (!) for 10000 people. I got him mixed up with Josh Rouse, so I was a bit dissappointed...
Shout Out Louds, I got these mixed up with someone who was supporting TSOOL a few months ago (and can't put my finger on who it was!). I enjoyed them enormously, but I shouldn't go to gigs with my sister, she doesn't share my taste in music so we left halfway (and it was getting cold again, can't even believe it was 10-15 degrees warmer a couple of weeks ago!).

Dirty Pretty Things last week, kentish town forum
They were ok, not the greatest show I have seen. Seemed to be going through the motions of being a 'rock' band and it was all a bit too contrived. Gary (drummer) is wasted in that band and should find someone else to play for. They played a couple of Libs songs which was the definite highlight.

If you have seen Dig! you might expect madness and chaos and to an extent, it was kind of less of a gig, more of a waiting to see what Anton will do. It was the first time I had seen them and musically, they are not really my cup of tea, but I can see how talented they are. It's a shame that the vocals aren't as strong as they could be as otherwise they would be far superior. Alas, there were no fights but they played a very long set. Definitely worth going to see at least once in your life/

Last night:
The Scrags from Gävle making their debut gig in Stockholm. They'd sent a demo to Jocke from Nomads who has Gearclub at Debaser and he was so totally impressed he booked them straight away.
They were freakin' awesome! Young skinny kids playing proper garagerock! Fun fun fun!
They were supporting Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3. As some here might know Steve used to have this excellent band called Dream Syndicate and after they split he's done dozens of soloalbums and collaborations and producing. He's had the three miracles for a few years now, the guitarist was absolutely fantastic! I couldn't keep my eyes of him! Totally awesome! And the drummer was great and Steve was so charming! Audience was mainly made of older guys (a little younger than me, like who were young when Dream Syndicate were at the top) and singing along to some of the old gems and brilliant newer stuff. After the gig I met Steve by the merch desk and had to thank him and shake his hand he was so cool. Gig of the year I say!!!

last night: pgmg in the glasshouse. second time i've seen them there.
they're fun. good performers. i have to take out my pretentious-ass snobby music critic brain to really enjoy them, and a lot of the lyrics are trite and sophomoric, and it seems like most of the time they're trying too hard to be stylish and end up with little substance BUT...they're fun.

I thought this thread disappeared.
I saw Clapton at Albert Hall about 10 days ago. Albert Hall is neat.
Clapton sang better than he had in ages. I wonder if he quit smoking. The whole band appeared to be new. Clapton didn't play guitar so much. He had two young guys who did. One of them bugged the shit out of me. The other had a long pony tail and he was fabulous. I'm guessing that he's the guy Clapton borrowed from the new Almann Bros. The crowd seemed to like all the songs that I hated and vice versa. He played a lot of early 70s stuff.
The crowd included quite a few people in their 20s so it wasn't all middle aged people as I expected. I had never been to Albert Hall before so I don't know if it's the hall or Clapton fans, but many didn't stand up during the obligatory standing O at the end. People rarely stood up at all. A few middle aged people lept to their feet and made very awkward hand and body movements during Cocaine. (I hate that song but it's more about me and my high school experience wherein the biggest losers always sing along to that song.) Anyhow, the funny thing was that they made these awkward gestures but never got completely into the song because they still looked around nervously to see if others were watching them. It was so funny I laughed in my fist until I cried. I should disclose that I'm only slightly less awkward that these people but I don't give a shit so that isn't as funny. Or maybe it's more funny. But I don't have to look at myself. And I never, ever, punch my fist in the air.

Springsteen (with 18 people in the band and no wife). I didn't buy the new CD but it sounds good live and he does a lot of talking to explain what the songs are about. He seems to be having a blast and the musicians are talented. The fast paced songs start to sound the same and he drags the encores on too long. The whole thing was 45 minutes too long, but I guess if that's my biggest complaint it's not too bad.
The Eels in Indy 6/9/06
I'm such a huge fan, an objective review is impossible. The Eels released a 2 disc album last summer that had an amazing combination of orchestral compositions and rock music. They did a tour last year that was sort of like a Willy Wonka experience focusing on a sort of eccentric genius vibe and had a symphony backing them.
This year they're rocking out. More stuff from their first album and some harder songs - and even taking some of their softer songs and giving them nano-robot death suits. The whole show was an experience with a giant security guard dancing through songs and the band dressed in ridiculous overalls and flight gear. E himself had black goggles on with a giant fan blowing towards the stage.
The opening band, Smoosh was two girls that couldn't have been more than 16. I was impressed with what they put out for how old they were. They came out during the first encore to dance with the security guard. The encores were a nice counterpoint to the sort of "tortured recluse" vibe that some of E's songs had.
Incredible show. 10/10

They really had a great show, with live cameras projecting images on rotating screens and stuff. And Anthony rocked his ass off.
They played all their big hits and the new songs in a good proportion, I think. But the sound was shit and they hardly ever talked to the audience. Still, the audience was pretty good, jumping all the time and singing along with every song. And finally I saw Give It Away live, which is my favourite RHCP-song.

NRQ 97 Days of Summer festival, 06-03-06. There were 11 bands, the only "big" 3 being Everclear, The Presidents Of The United States Of America, and The Rock 'N Roll Soldiers (the rest were local indie bands, but a couple were amazing).
The Presidents rocked the house, and put on one of the best live shows I've seen yet. Great group.
And the band I went for, Everclear, put on an even more amazing show. I got to meet the lead singer, Art Alexakis, afterwards, and chatted with him briefly.

Might post some videos and pics and maybe even reviews later, have some important work to do first...

Hilltops Hoods ft. Downsyde / TZU / Hermitude / Crossbred Mongrels / Funkours
was really fucking good! first time i had seen downsyde and i loved 'em. music was loud, the crowd was awesome, bar was.... expensive and limited but oh well. really good.
8/10 - not all 10 because i just wish the night went for a bit longer.. the featurette bands had, like, a max of 5 songs (n)
NIN - sometime last week.
I saw them a few months back and literally fell asleep during the show.
This time around...It was out of control. No artsy movie on the big screen...just loud loud music. It was at an outdoor venue this time around too, so that may have changed things up a bit.
Sonic Youth - sometime last week.
I've been a Sonic Youth fan for a loooooong time. But I stopped buying their albums after Washing Machine in 95. I did see them a couple of times after that and had a great time.
This time around they only played new songs. It was good, but they didn't seem to be that much into it, either did the crowd. I didn't recognize a single song of their 1 1/2 hour playlist.

friday, Eels at the London Astoria
Supported by Smoosh or whatever they are called. I turned up a bit 'late' at 8.30 and appear to have missed them supporting and the first 15 minutes of Eels. This was the first time I had seen them but had heard such great reviews, I was really hoping to be blown away and I really wasn't. I was soooooo disappointed, I don't know whether it was the venue or the crowd but I was bored completely. Absolutely gutted. E was on fine form and chatting with the crowd but I thought it was just snooze-central. 4/10

Second time I have seen them and I have to admit I don't get the fuss at all. 7/2 - RevCo/Ministry. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed RevCo - they are a party band! There's lots of action on stage during their show. Rick Nielsen joined them for a song also. Ministry was cool - I'm glad I got to finally see them, because I hear Al may retire soon.

The Fratellis, last night, Electric Ballroom in Camden
The first support band were called The Enemy and apart from the terrible name, they were actually not too bad. A bit 'lad rock' but they had lots of energy and were going for it. The second support Figure 5 were awful. completely forgetful. Just before 10pm, The Fratellis came on. It was the first time I had seen them but I was very impressed. They interacted well with the crowd and played a decent length set including, Cigarello, Got ma nuts from a hippy, Henrietta, Vince the lovable stoner and about 6 others. I think they also played Creeping up the backstairs in the encore but I can't remember. I'm going to give them 7/10.
Deftones the other month in Manchester.
Exit 10 supported, I was really impressed with them. Chino and crew showed up, showed what eating excess pies/burgers can do to your figure. Rocked the house, good gig altogether but the sound was too harsh and flat. All on one level except for the stupidly large sounding drums.

Orson and Basement Jaxx played first- both did really well. I'd like to see Basement Jaxx in a smaller show one day (not 80 000 people).
Robbie's show was great but-oh my god- he looked like crap!!! He must have been on some serious drugs or something. His face was so swolen you could hardly see his eyes and everybody was shocked for the first 3 songs. I kept waiting for him to pass out on stage but he really pulled himself together and was funny as hell.
Good show but too many people standing in front of me-

X is touring with Rollins Band. John Doe said during X's set that he knew that some of us came to see Rollins Band. He was sooooo wrong.
It was such fun all around. We hung around outside until Rollins was done. When Rollins was done, all these guys left the club, and they filed out one by one, wearing their identical black t-shirts and long shorts with black shoes. At the same time, all these people who didn't dress alike filed in. Half were women. As we staked out our territory on the floor, you could still smell the testosterone left behing by the Rollins fans.
I saw the smallest mosh pit ever and probably the oldest mosh pit ever. For the first time, I saw someone moshing while holding up a cell phone. What is the world coming to?

Just got back from seeing Eels and it was pretty damn awesome. There was no opening act. Instead Knuckles did some stand up comedy and told some drummer, guitarist, and lead singer jokes (but no bassist jokes, zing!) and then he sang some Michael McDonald then pointed to me and serenaded me for a bit. Pretty sweet. Krazy Al cracked me up! They really brought on the face melting rock tonight. Excellent, excellent show. 10/10
I saw Ozma with the Rentals last night too and Ozma was rocking hardcore! Although Daniel's excessive sweating was a little off-putting they still put on a great show. I'm glad they're back together. I found the Rentals to be a bit boring and campy so we left early. Ozma 8/10 and the Rentals 6/10.
My guessing is that you saw them a lollapalooza. You need to check them out in a club or venue, then you'll see.
i saw them at a very small, intimate club
Dr. Octagon and Kut Masta Kurt last night.
Good shit. Keith was throwing out british nudie mags (as opposed to fried chicken in a plastic baggies like the last time I saw him). My friend caught a Mayfair.
The only problem was when they did like 30 songs in 10 minutes. They would start a song...and then cut it short (like 30 seconds into it) and move on to another. It wasn't too terrible or anything, but cutting off Earth People was a bit disappointing.
First time i saw Kut Master Kurt without a disguise on. He had one at first..but took off his matisyahu style beard halfway through the set. Who knows...it may not have even been him since I have no idea what he looks like.
Afterwards when the crowd thinned out. Keith came to the bar and was just hanging out. Very fucking cool guy. Our camera phone wasn't working too well and he practically wouldn't let us leave without getting a decent picture.
Oh yeah...he signed my wife's boob.
Violent Femmes on Saturday.
too drunk to rate fairly. I only know 3 or 4 of their songs, so when they played those songs i paid attention. Other than that I was getting out of hand.
Birdmonster on Monday.
My wife always went on about this band so I listened to their album. I wasn't impressed. It wasn't god awful or anything, but I just didn't like it. She wanted to see them play so I told her I would go...and it was probably one of the top 15 shows I've seen in my life. The sound was great...the connection they had with us in the crowd was strong...and the connection they all had together was even stronger. I still am not a fan of the album(s) though...but I'll see them again live next time they come around.

BabyShambles last night, Brixton Academy
I haven't seen Shambles since January and obviously a lot has happened since then. Well, a lot happens in a week with this band. Anyways, it was good to see the venue a lot more packed than when I saw them there in October/November time. Pat has been replaced, Drew has a new haircut, Pete looks a lot healthier and Adam, well, he's just Adam. They kicked off with Pipedown and the early half of the set was mostly stuff from the album with some old Libs thrown in (Time for Heroes, What Katie did). Undoubtedly the biggest cheer of the night came when Kate Moss joined the band on stage for La Belle et la Bete - she looked amazing which outweighed her average vocals. They also played lots of new material which bodes well for a new album, either solo acoustic or full band outing. This is probably the 13th time I have seen the band, and though it wasn't my favorite show of theirs, it was good fun and promising... 7/10

Lloyd Cole last night at Södra Teatern.
Him alone with his old guitarist by his side. Arrived on stage looking like some old safari tourist (Dr Livingstone I presume?) and started off with some Plastic Wood! I suspect not that many were familiar he's done some plinkety plonk! At least the applauses were very "polite"...
Then he played some stuff from his solo albums, also from the latest (Antidepressant), but alas not the title track, which me like alot! and some classic Commotions tracks, but no Perfect Skin!!!! I wonder if he was saving those for the second encore, which never came. I hate that some people keep leaving the stage just so that people should applaud them back...
I was on the front row, right in the middle!! He made a few mistakes (put that thingy on the guitar neck on wrong place, getting the beat wrong from the computer, keyboard running out of batteries  ) and after one he said he wished he could do like Spock, pointing his palm at me (!) "You don't remember what just happened..." and appologising those whose partners had dragged them along and them falling asleep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAR9K6Ymvn0)... Later in the bar I met a friend of mine and she said you can't see that far (over the audience) from the stage (she's a musician as well) so he must've refering when she was leaning on her new boyfriend (http://www.christiankjellvander.com/)'s shoulder with her eyes closed... (He knows Lloyd, they both have each other in Top 8 on My Space...).
I didn't dare to take that many pics, but I tried to film one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm_07nI_nMo) of the encores from my lap, not realising at first I was covering the mic with my finger...

I got there late cos of fucking traffic, but only missed the first song. I'd listened to the new album a couple of times so I knew they would play some stuff from it.
This was definately in my top 5 gigs of all time. Evan Dando was just amazing, as were the band. And to cap it all the drummer was the dude from the house band on Rockstar Supernova, and if anyone has seen that you'll know how mind-blowingly good he is.
Band played for about 40 minutes then went off while Evan played acoustically for about 20 minutes. Awesome. Then they came back on and played for about another 25 minutes. Then for the encore Evan came back on and played acoustically stuff from across the ages, as well as a load of his solo stuff for another 20 minutes or so.
Just incredible.:)

It was great! There weren't too many people there, cause they aren't very
well know in Germany yet, unfortunately. But that meant really seeing the

They ROCK!!! (although the show was way too short - only 1h 10min...)

such a fucking great show
it was at a small club in Kelowna and I was like 8 feet from Chris murphy's crotch
they played all the hits, ALL OF THEM, and then some of the new shitsies
goddamn it was great
and Jay totally played it up for our cameras and smiled like a 3 year old sittin on Santa's knee while we snapped off some close-ups, He's so great
Chris kept making really funny jokes about all the girls there dressed up for halloween like "we got a sexy cop, a sexy cat, a sexy witch...I wanna see some sexy back!"

Five o'Clock Heroes last night, Brixton Windmill
Fecking ace little venue, in the middle a residential area but it was absolutely rammed. They came on about 11 and played for about 40mins and I thought they were brilliant. So tight and played a great set, all stuff off the album which is good as I don't know anything else! the 3 friends I was with hadn't heard anything at all and came out as converts. Had a brief chat with the singer afterwards and he seemed dead nice. I would definitely go and see them again 8/10. I'd give them more but it was a short set 8)

Michael Franti and Spearhead - 10/10.. great long show, lots of energy.. and lots of dancing
Bob Dylan/ Foo Fighters - 9/10.. both sounded really, really good. bands were very tight.. dylan is dylan.. lived up to the legend.. oddly enough, i was a bit disappointed that he didn't play more new stuff (as his new album is fantastic).. the foo fighters acoustic are great. only drawback was the crowd (subdued) and the venue (arena)

Patrick Wolf, last night at Concorde 2 in Brighton
No idea who the support were but they weren't that great so meh. Patrick came on stage at exactly 9.30, sporting gold trousers, a cape with a picture of Brighton pier on the back and a Robin Hood type hat (y) He was accompanied, by a drummer, a voila/violinist, a double bass player and electronic type dude. He kicked off with Tristan and they played a good hour of new stuff from the forthcoming album and old favorites, including a storming version of the The Childcatcher and Paris. He also had really good banter with the crowd and took some requests when he lost where he was on the set list. Throughout the set he played piano, violin, organ, a theremin and a ukelele. He closed the set with The Magic Position and the encore was a Boy Like Me. This is the second time I have seen him and I fell in love all over again. 9.5/10

A SECRET GIG. Never been to one of those before, was quite nice to randomly meet their manager at the cashpoint to have him push us to go. I was definitely excited having seen a mega set at Reading. They played "some 'its" and some new stuff which wasn't as impressive as the older material bar one song, maybe. I remember not being so convinced before when they first came about, though. I shall definitely be catching them up on tour we'll all hear it on Radio One at least 10 times a day. The performance was immense and I lost my shoes.

Symphony Silicon Valley, 21 January 2007.
Beethoven's Eggmont Overture was fine.
O'Connor's "Old Brass" Violin Concerto was flabby and seemed pretty pointless. Though he did take a solo in the last movement which was really good, and I wished he'd somehow built his concerto out of those ideas; instead, it just seemed to stop everything dead.
Dvorak's 7th was what we really went to hear, though, and they did a nice job with it. The first movement was particularly good.
I liked our seats, and the acoustics were good except for the very very bottom end, which just disappeared. When the woman on the double bass would go into lower notes, it seemed like she was just miming.
On an interesting note, during the Dvorak one of the violinist's bridge just snapped. I've never seen anything like that before. I actually had my eyes on that section when it happened. There was this kind of low-sounding SPRONG and all the strings went slack at once. The guy just made his way offstage and came back at the top of the next movement.

went to see the awful 80s swedish rock band europe on valentine day. it was most entertaining. but obviously crap. but good. the highlight was 'the final countdown'. the other highlight was joey tempest singing into a loudhaler that had a microphone in it...so it was just actually a microphone and not a loudhaler, but he kept pretending it was a loudhaler and putting it in the guitarists face. 7/10.

Gossip at the Astoria, London Saturday 24th Feb
Got there in time for the main support as I was interested to hear what they came up with. Bondo do Role are a brazilian 3 piece and I had high hopes for a CSS type experience. These hopes were dashed almost immediately. 2 guys and one girl. One guy 'DJing', the other 2 dancing around like mentalists, trying to rap over random 80s tracks being mediocrely mixed by the 'DJ'. I couldn't even make out whether they were 'rapping' in Portuguese or English. The girl was dressed like an extra from Elf and was doing godawful pole dancing and grinding. The choice of 80s tunes was the sole redeeming feature - including snippets of Final Countdown, A-ha and possibly Tiffany. They also played some Grease.
Then Gossip came on and saved the day. Beth was wearing a blue skintight jumpsuit and bouncing around on stage all night long (bar a costume change into a black catsuit). They played a couple of new songs, but mostly it was stuff off 'Standing in the way of control'. My personal highlight was 'Yr Mangled Heart'. For a 3 pieee, they have so much presence and energy and Beth's voice is so powerful and soulfoul but then she screams like a proper rawk banshee. I really enjoyed it, no encore which was crap but a definite 8/10

Quite possibly one of the finest live performances I have ever witnessed.(y) (y)
The support were boring (The Black Angels). Very dull and every song just had one chord.
Then The Black Keys came on. I've never heard such an amazing guitar sound, and considering it is just the guitar and drums it was such an immense sound.
Quite simply they were fucking badass and if you get a chance to see them you should.

Lamb Of God - saw them last Thusday in Anaheim. They frickin rocked for nearly an hour and a half. I saw the open for Slayer a few months back in an arena and liked em but they were much better, as most bands are, in a smaller venue. Those rednecks rip. Trivium, who opened, was pretty good too.
Saw Poison the well supported by Cry For Silence and Ghost Of A Thousand
last night at leeds cockpit.
Went to see Ghost Of A Thousand more than anything. I felt like the only guy in there who knew who they were. It was great though although the singers voice was lost a bit in the mix.
Cry For Silence were good, amazing guitar work. The guy had a 12 string axe. I always like a bit of fancy guitar work.
Poison the well rocked hard too and the crowd ate them up. I'm not really that familiar with them (i prefer british hardcore) but I can see why they have a strong fanbase overhere.

Beastie Boys - October 2006 at The Catalyst * Santa Cruz, CA
Great venue as there was only a few hundred people. I had excellent vantage point being in the front row, right in front of Yauch. Since the Santa Cruz crowd was mostly hippie-types, there was no pushing and we had a great amount of room to dance in. Loved making eye contact with Yauch. I figure I'll never get to see them in such a small venue again, so I will always treasure this intimate experience.
The negative of this show was that I was so distracted with trying to report back to my boyfriend, who was out of town, that I didn't absorb myself in the show as much as I should have.

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, 12-03 Tivoli, Utrecht.
I had no idea what to expect of this evening as I only went along with a friend and didn't know the band too well. I had never been to the venue either and it was ok. A bit small and not a lot of atmosphere, but at least the audience was nice.
There were 2 support bands. The dutch 'We vs. Death' who play instrumental post-rock with trumpets, and pretty much ruled and 'Forget Cassette's'. A mainly keyboard oriented band with a female singer who screeched and moaned too much for my liking...
Then... Trail of dead. It was way above any of my expectations. They started off soft and slow and soon started rocking like a mofo. I liked that every band member plays pretty much every instrument and they swap places in between songs. This, for me, was an introduction into a genre which I had always dismissed as being pretentious and whingy.

Arrested Development/Simple Minds/INXS @ the WACA, 17-3-07
got there about 7pm, i had a seated seat and my friend had a general admission standing ticket. we wanted to be together, so we found a grassy knoll where we could sit together and just see the stage, and drink and eat. saw a guy pass out and hit his head on a wheelie bin. lol. i assume he'd been celebrating st pat's day.
only knew 3 songs arrested development played, the redemption song, mr wendal and everyday people. the guy i was with is only 18 and had no idea who they were, but for me it was a flashback to bluelight discos in the early 90s. heeeeeeyyyy hoooooo hey ho hey ho. sound was a bit quiet where we were.
moved around to find some seats together for simple minds. found a set of four seats with one guy there and sat down. found out the guy also wasn't sitting in the right seat so we werre good to stay. his friend joined us and gave me a joint. score!
simple minds were awesome. jim kerr has so much energy still and a fantastic voice, although he didn't really use it until alive and kicking. songs i remember them playing: Love Song, All the Things She Said, Glittering Prize, Ghostdancing/Gloria, Dont You (forget About me), Sanctify, Alive and Kicking, See the Lights, Let There be Love
alive and kicking was definitely the highlight.
then there's a curtin covering the stage while inxs sets up. soon there is a 5 min countdown displayed. then the familiar strains of TNT start coming from the speakers. its a cd but the crowd goes WILD. OY OY. watch me exploooooooode! the whole crowd was singing.
countdown finishes and inxs go straight into suicide blonde
jd only changed his shirt twice lol. he was really good, quite tall so could run across the stage awesomely quick. only wish i was closer.
set list (don't know all the new songs):
Suicide Blonde

Not Enough Time

young kids looked happy however.:(
i was so pumped for this concert; it was one of the best metal line-ups i could wish for. Mastodon - starting to make a real names for themselves in the metal world and i fucking dig them. Slayer - well... it's fucking SLAYOOORRRRR
got on the train to the gig only to be greeted by about 100 people in slayer/pantera/dimmu borgir shirts just screaming 'FUCKING SLAYORRRR!!' - fucking pumped by now.
get to the showgrounds where it was at, more drunk/high/acid-tripping people just screaming 'SLAYOOORRRR!!!', find the bar, get a couple of drinks and start pissing it up - still pumped.
Mastodon come on and start it up. they were great but didn't get the appreciation they deserved. a lot of people just watched and didn't really get thrashing around. their set was a bit small too, but they were the opening guests so yeah.
then comes SLAYER!! oh fuck yes. on the ball the whole show. just perfect. didn't miss a beat. they opened the set with Disciple and everyone was still a little bit placid... then Tom started screaming/asking if they were ready for war? then that was it. that's when it became a Slayer moshpit. everyone just pushing/punching the fuck out of each other. it was good fun. no bruises yet but i know where some will blow up.
they had a good set - they played a lot of rarer songs; some songs of South of Heaven and Divine Intervention. their newest songs went down well... good moshing music.
Mastodon - 3 and a half OUT OF 5 (if only they played a bit more of their older songs and were able to play for longer)
Slayer - 4 and a half OUT OF 5 (ONLY because jeff and kerry's guitars totally died in the middle of a song....only thing that didn't make it perfect)

Lord of the Rings Symphonie (yeah I know, nerdy, huh?)
...and although I really liked the music in the films, the concert was the worst concert I've ever seen in my entire life (even worse than the Scorpions or New Kids on the Block)!!! (n)
The Orchestra was bad and unprofessional (mistuned instruments and not at all playing together)!
The choir was even worse: neither in time nor together at all!!!
The kid's choir was the worst of all!!!!!
(...and don't tell me that they're only kids. Even our elementary-school's choir was more professional than this and we didn't charge 70 fuckin EUR for our concerts)
The "fellow" listeners in the audience were not only nerds in stupid costumes which was expectable there, but fucking dillholes who had to comment every fucking note, pretending to understand music and not even noticing how bad the musicians were!!!!!! The guy behind me actually "spanked his monkey" (NO JOKE) first, then during the last song began to cry out really loud.

But in fact the visualisation of the Lord of the Rings Symphony was the only interesting part in the whole concert. Because they screened the original illustrations and you could tell how much efford was put into the film to make it as close to those illustartions as possible...

Patti Smith, Camden Roundhouse, last night
Well, I was asked to go along with my friend earlier this week as he had a spare ticket he wanted to sell. Though I don't know much about her, he's a big fan and was raving about it so I thought, why not. I'd never been to the venue anyway so thought I'd give it a go. The crowd were SO mixed, possibly the most diverse audience I had ever seen, and the venue is stunning. She came on stage exactly at 8.15 and played solidly until about 9.45 then came back and did a couple of encores. Apparently she has a new album out of covers and she did a few from that - some Hendrix, Neil Young, Nick Cave and an amazing version of Smells Like Teen Spirit. She also did her big hit 'Because the night' which I actually didn't know she sang. Anyways, though I thought that I might leave midway through (the first hour was a bit dreary/self-indulgent) the second half was really good and I stayed for the whole thing. I think I might investigate some of her stuff now (as long as it's not dreary 12 minute meandering nonsense)

Beastie Boys, Wednesday night in Stockholm
Right at the front for the entire show and have the barrier bruises to prove it. They played for about an hour and 45mins about 28 songs in all. There is a set list in the Beasties Live section but I don't know if anything is missing - it's a bit of a blulr in places. The new stuff sounds REALLY good live but they played a good mix of old and new stuff which was interesting seeing as the crowd was predominantly young. Well worth the flight delays and effort. And I got to meet some other BBMBers which was excellent (y)

==============================================
Fun, Entertaining, Occasionally sloppy show.
Copeland is a God on drums though.
Not really a fan of ROXANNE, but they butchered the shit out of it with a bloated 7-minute jazz improv thing.
Light show was top notch.
When they were all on the same page together, there were some amazing moments!
WRAPPED AROUND YOUR FINGER proved to be a surprise highlight.

I went to Gwen a couple of weeks ago. I thoroughly enjoyed geeking out and being girly. Singing silly pop songs about love and dancing my ass off. The only major mood killer was the girl who passed out in the bathroom. Alcohol/drug overdose, she had to have CPR. It was very scary.

Daft Punk @ Wamu Theater or whatever it's called was a fun gig. The crowd was really well-behaved. I didn't know what to expect as it was GA and the fans seemed really young.
I have a question if anyone knows the venue: The opening act -- The Rapture -- were unable to see each other on stage due to completely crappy venue lighting. The lead singer begged for lights. The venue did a lovely job of computerized lights to sweep over the crowd and create an atmosphere, but how do you completely fail to light the band, even if it's the opener?

Prince, at the O2 London, Saturday night
Support was good, some woman called Nikki Costa who gave it her all despite the fact that the seats were still filling up. But Prince was just beyond amazing. He kicked off with Let's Go Crazy and then just played pretty much about 4 songs before doing costume changes (I think 4 in all) Here's a rough set list lifted from memory but there's loads missing I can't remember. The stage was awesome (symbol shaped obviously), Purple Rain was immense with everyone (20,000 people??) singing along, Black Sweat and Kiss got everyone dancing and I think I peed my pants and shed a little tear for the solo electric version of Little Red Corvette. Just brilliant. He played for just under 2 hours and we got a free copy of the new album. Great night

V festival, perth esplanade.
good day, even if i did want to go home half way due to illness, but i stuck it out. (y)
cut copy was good, for a day set.
walked around for jesus and mary... but they sounded alright, i really only know the one song from the crow soundtrack. good to see the doc martens crowd happy.
modest mouse not really my thing, lol i trekked into the crowd cos i thought qotsa was about to start...
QOTSA, awesome. (y) josh is such a charismatic frontman. from the moment he came onstage... wow. other members are not too bad either. wish i was in front of the bassist though... he did most of the backup vocals which is my other love. the crowd was annoying me so much though... girl behind me screamed the entire time. people were blocking their ears but only i said anything. hate crowds. people pushing me out of my second row position  good set list although i would have traded burn the witch for something else... i'm designer or something newer.
duran duran were also really entertaining. soo cheesy but i loved it all. needed less audience singing though. lots of fun. highlight was probably notorious, or girls on film.
pumpkins... meh. i stayed for the first acoustic song then went to check presets, but that was a shit/mudpit (the mud smelt like sewage), so so gross. ended up going to the weird dj room cos it was the only clean dry place.
caught the last few songs from presets. wished i was in the tent! presets are fucking awesome :)

Gogol Bordello are playing here the 21st, but I can't go due to work. :'(
My last gigs were Kaizers Orchestra, 1-4 in Paradiso, Amsterdam and 2-4 in Het Paard, The Hague.
The show in Amsterdam was great. The band were so energetic and the front guy really connected with the audience. People were clapping and singing along and they liked us so much they did a special 2nd encore.
At the end of it the band stopped playing and just sat down and listened to us singing with looks of awe on their faces. <3
The only thing that was better last time I saw them, was that the band was 'wilder' then. Crowdsurfing, playing songs in the middle of the crowd etc. But maybe the Paradiso stage was too high to do stuff like that.
Afterwards I met the band, aww, they're so lovely. The lead singer apologized for me getting a black eye. ()
The day after, in The Hague wasn't so good. There were more people, and the crowd seemed friendlier at first, but they didn't respond at all. No clapping, no singing, no dancing. They didn't even applaud at the end of the songs. The band didn't even bother anymore, and didn't even do their special 'band introduction', which has been part of their show for years.
I didn't really get it, because everyone applauded for the opening artist, Geoff Berner. Now that guy really deserves some applause, but clapping for him but not the main band is just strange...
Oh well, I had fun anyway. Can't wait untill they come back to Holland. Probably next year.

DH and I went to see Bruce Springsteen Sat nite (31/05/08) at the Emirates Stadium. That Bruce, he may be as old as my dad but by golly he puts on a good show. The only song they didn't play that I would have really liked to hear was Prove It All Night, and I am a bit sad about that, as it is my second favourite song of his. However they did play a version of my most favourite, Because the Night, that was hot enough to scorch the panties off a nun, so it's all good(y)

Oh well.
Last gig was Sasquatch. There was no one who knocked my socks off, The Cure was probably my favorite, Robert Smith was in great voice and they sounded and looked great. REM was sort of boring and those bastardos didn't play its the end of the world (as we know it).
Flaming Lips were pretty amazing... MIA was good but not mind blowing. I wanted to kill myself during the Mars Volta, missed all of the comedy stuff. Michael Franti and Spearhead was pleasant. Right as the sun was setting, I'm not a fan of that music but it was a beautiful view, sunny but not blazing hot, I was relaxed. Nice moment.

I saw the Cure last night at The Shrine in LA. Would have been a 10/10 show had they thrown "A Forest" into the setlist for me. The venue was so appropriate for that band and the sound was some of the best I've ever heard. The merch selection was rad. The performance of "Pictures of You" had me weak in the knees. The set went on for 2hrs and 45min including not 1, not 2 but THREE encores. Awesome.

Bob Dylan 9/6.
Gig was a 9.
I wasn't the biggest fan before going, just knew that $40 for a living legend was a must go.
Then again, I saw Lou Rawls play 2 weeks before he died and James Brown a month before he went...
So it was with some trepidation I bought the tix.
He and his band were incredible. Super tight. Totally professional.
Start times on the stubs: 8 pm. Actual start time: 8:02.
Banter? Who can say? I think he might've thanked Cleveland at the front and end - but we were in San Diego.
I've never seen roadies write the setlist ('hey - we'll play whatever you wanna hear tonight, Mike') before, and I've never seen the setlists carefully gathered up and put into a locking drawer, either.
Given the famous 'what the hell did he say' factor, plus the great fact that he is one to reinvent tunes for the stage - and I can't say what songs were played. (I was hoping for 'ballad of the thin man' and hey, I might've heard it! I've no idea!) Still - they kept me dancing for over 2 hours, and the crowd was the most age-varied one could imagine. It was good for the soul to see so many granma/grandpa/auntie/uncles waving their arms in the air and not sharing their weed.
Of course, once I go down that road (appreciating the relative 'grooviness' of the boomers) I do sometimes wind up angry. You know - 'how'd that revolution turn out' and 'thanks for the president' and so forth...
But why be negative? I had a great time, I fell in love with Bob Dylan, I took a friend who rarely has an evening out, and we had a ball.
If you have the chance, I suggest getting to a show. I also suggest standing to the left of the stage as that is how he orients his keyboard.
Shellac last monday night.

I haven't posted in a while here--I went to a lot of mediocre concerts. My only noteworthy concerts over the summer were several Radiohead concerts. Now we're getting a bunch of promising concerts this fall.
Last night, I saw Sigur Ros. I really enjoyed them--They're always good but they were better last night than the last time I saw them. I had fairly low expectations because I don't care for their current CD. I like them best when it's just the band on stage and last night it was just the band until the end. Nice surprise. Plus they played some of my favorite songs.
I was quite impressed with the crowd. People were silent and paying complete attention to the music. That makes it so much better. (y)

I saw one of my favorite bands on sunday - Nada Surf! :D (y)
They played in the Columbia Club here in Berlin. It was a great show - awesome setlist and a great atmosphere. As the Columbia club is an old cinema, built for the US army, there are some steps down, so it's easy to see the stage. And the opening act (Underground Railroad) was great too!
I liked the show very much! :)

AMAZING show. i give it a 9 b/c it didn't go until 2 and i wanted to dance more. the presets were so awesome and visually stunning. i love his voice. Heartbreak was fun, very new wave (some would say new romantic) 80s vibe. the singer had a flock of seagulls haircut and it was very fro like. i called it a flock of fro. dude had the MOVES.
cut copy... wow. they really know how to make a crowd dance at the right time. perfect build up and release. i have a charlie horse in my butt the next day due to all the dancing and driving i did... it was WELL worth it.

BTW, it was a strange sort of crowd. There were a number of solo parents who clearly brought a kid. There were young couples. There were aging frat boys, but without the bad manners that Beasties' american aging frat boy fans have. They were just energetic and having a good time, and doing the embarrassing Weezer hand gesture.

See, I could sign up for that in a heartbeat. Last time I saw her she was doing the horrible new stuff in a venue that was too big for her.
As for Weezer, I was this close to giving the crowd the Van Halen hands, just to confuse things.

I suppose they make a lot of money on special editions of the albums and whatnot. We're in that era where we can have the 20 and 25 year anniversaries. Like in the 80s when we had all kinds of special Beatles' milestones.

I saw Jay Reatard again. the three opening bands were kind of confusing. this band Prizzy Prizzy Please was the first and the lead singer also played saxophone. they were extremely competent musicians, but they were borrowing from so many genres that I couldn't really get into it. it was like prog meets elton john meets speed metal meets ska.
the second band we didn't watch because they were too emo. the third band Cola Freaks, had a singer that reminded me of ian curtis mixed with joe cocker (mannerism wise). I thought they sounded pretty cool. ha, I just looked them up and they're from denmark. funny, I love danes. my friend thought they were too t-shirty. they were all wearing t-shirts I guess....?
jay was awesome, we standing front and center. it broke down into some industrial NIN shit at the end which was fun, but blasted my ears so hard I'm half deaf now. me and the drummer kept making eye contact, now we're engaged. (y)

I JUST SAW STEVIE MOTHERFUCKING WONDER.....
Seriously? Wow!
This was my week for Canadians.
Monday -- Broken Social Scene at my favorite club. It was a fun show. But everything I see at that club is fun. They mentioned that their fellow countryman Neil Young was in town. :)
Tuesday -- Neil Young. I think it might be the most enjoyable show I've ever seen him do. It was better than the last few tours for sure. Maybe it's partly the upcoming election. People in the crowd are so stoked at all the concerts right now. Maybe it's because Neil did all the hits without any sort of awful theme. But I have to give him major credit. The guy is OLD. My seat was pretty close to Neil, and he looked fine from my seat, but when I took a look at the big monitor I saw his face, neck, top of his head, sideburns, etc. and he looks scary. But the man did his signature guitar rocking back and forth thing for over two hours without any reduction in energy. His band sounded fine. The crowd was fairly old, but very intense. They weren't getting drunk like at Stones concerts. They were 100% into the music. It's always funny seeing old people doing a hippie dance in his/her seat but several weeks before this election it was pretty fucking cool. Oh, and Neil has the oldest guitar roadie ever. Neil didn't mention Broken Social Scene.
Thursday -- Rufus Wainwright at a beautiful theater. Fantastic as always. Better because of the election. I don't even like his CDs, but live the man is compelling. And so funny/charming/sexy. I am always amazed when one person can make such beautiful sound with just a piano and a voice and no staging or lighting or nonsense.
I can't believe it had been four years since I saw him! The last time I saw Rufus was the night after I saw the Beasties at MSG. My friend and I flew out of NYC and went straight to the theater in Minneapolis for Rufus. And this time I saw Rufus and bought Beastie tickets in the same day. :)
Tonight -- I'm so pooped that I skipped my concert tonight and gave the ticket away. Plus I hate the club.

She could do stand-up comedy as well. And her voice is just amazing. I'll definietly go to her next show in Berlin again! <3 :)

Bob Dylan last night...BORING...not that I was expecting pyro or such...just legend...and I've seen him years ago and he was really bad, embarasingly bad...it's just I saw old Neil day's ago and no one does acoustic con harmonica better,no one...at least this time around he was coherent...much ado about nada,really...which is the way I feel about him most day's...6 outta 10...and he should pay me $74 bucks to watch him forget where he is...
*With the exception of "Levee's Gonna Break" which was fantastic, one shining song*
Steven Malkmus and the Jicks, last night...the mans a legend, the show was quirky and fun a little too loose for my likings, kinda slacking...still tons of fun...shades of Pavement, shades of Silver Jews...shit what I'd give for a Pavement reunion....7 outta 10 on the richter scale...(y)
sloppiness is a malkmus trademark!

my last gig was 2 days ago. i DJed a private party at a club i'd never played but wanted to.
there were supposd to be 400 and there were maybe 20 people there. i got lazy and pretty much played what i wanted. there wasn't a monitor, so i didn't mix or anything. i've gotten so many compliments on that set. it's amazing how when i don't plan for something, it turns out to be awesome.

Saw Ray LaMontagne last night in Brighton. No one would describe him as Mr Personality (he didn't speak at all apart from introducing the band at about song 8 and then saying thanks at the end) but it was bloody good. He's gruff but great. And it was a good mixed crowd - scenesters to 60 year olds

The Killers on Sunday night...second time I've seen them, very tight, great sound but twice will be enough...the addition of the horn player was nice, funk'd it up a little, added depth...and that 5th member who they hide in that little box with racks of keyboards, guitars and a violin also added some of the fresh,fresh...they don't outwardly seem to enjoy each other that much, almost no interaction between members...quite strange...
7 outta 10...
Girl Talk last week. Couple of local acts and then all hell broke loose for about an hour and a half. I was up on stage and literally a foot behind Gregg. Amazing show.

Went to see Antony & The Johnsons last night. Very good but I think he's more suited to smaller venues. It felt cavernous at the apollo. The band were excellent and he was completely enchanting when he was singing but chatty and funny in between songs. The arrangements on some of the older pieces were wonderful.
If anyone is going, beware of weird performance art support act - had to stuff mouth with scarf for fear of laughing and appearing 'uncultured' (8/10) He lost marks for the weird dancing woman
The Thermals (y)
Sounded really good live, good vibe, fun stuff.

T.V on the Radio...Last night at Mac Hall...which is a shitty venue...I hate that venue...but it's the only venue in this town for bands who draw more than a thousand but less than five...anyway's the show was had a strange rhythm to it sometimes highly danceable and energetic and then sometimes wondering and directionless...Golden Age was FANTASTIC,an extended funk fest...and the drummer is amazing...

I guess it would be Sasquatch. NIN was the highlight for me. Trent still sounds great and the band was tight. They work the shit out of their guitar techs, though, different guitar on almost every song. And the mix was about the best I've ever heard at the gorge, you could hear everyone at just the right levels.

Mix Master Mike, Saturday night…you know, with the scratch routines…it was a ton of fun and he let the record play a lot more than the last time I saw him…I still think Kid Koala has the best live set when it comes to the wheels of steel…but Mike is just hard…(y)

2 Blur shows in London - great, they're so gooood live. I've been a huge fan since 1995 but this was the first time I saw them live so obviously my expectations were high, but they didn't let me down.
