My lunch today

Zucchini (grown to a size of a marrow), red onion, cashews, sunflower seeds and overboiled broccolo stir fried in a wok, fresh pasta (one with spinach) (my newly made gooseberry/rhubarb and gooseberry jams trying to get their 15 minutes)
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/6450/foodstuffmx8.jpg

served with my favourite light soy sauce, pumpkin sallad (more like pickled pumpkin) from Finland and some pesto dressing and a glass of horrible chardonnay (gotta mix it with my homemade elderflower soft drink, cause otherwise it's undrinkable)

i made this shit from scratch. no premade broth, no boxed mixes. fresh veggies. yeah, the beans were canned, and i used a few frozen things toward the end, but it was almost all fresh. and it was delish. kitchen sink minestrone.

mirepoix (more or less, + garlic)
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d164/105cosmo/minestrone1.jpg

+ tomato sauce, then browned in oven
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d164/105cosmo/minestrone2.jpg

then stewed in water with spices (sage, basil, italian blend) for a good 45 minutes, then strained = vegetable stock!

starting some wild rice (i ended up not using the rice cooker because it was way too much for that little baby thing)
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d164/105cosmo/minestrone3.jpg

celery and heirloom tomatoes (look how richly colored and beautiful they are, mmm so succulent. anyone that doesn't like tomatoes needs to try heirloom variety tomatoes.)
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d164/105cosmo/minestrone4.jpg

not quite as pretty, some canned kidney beans.

i made it from scratch but i didn't photograph the whole process, so y'all just gotta believe me. basically it's a whole load of 'erbs and spices and vegetables and what not pounded together and then whisked together and you have your curry paste and then you put the paste in the oven for freakin' 90 minutes and then you put your lamb in and simmer for about an hour until tender and yeah, that's about it. heh.

teh lamb. meat for turd. man, it took me ages to find lamb. i had to have diced leg of lamb but in the absence of it diced, i did it myself with some difficulty. and lordy - it was so expensive! last time i've having lamb in a while.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/Curry001.jpg

teh finished result. with basmati rice, naan bread, homemade raita and ice cold tiger beer. it tasted better than it looks. curry has the misfortune of looking like brown liquid shit no matter how much love and attention you put into it. it was more red in real life.

the lamb curry was great, trust me. jamie oliver said so. so tender and mmmm. DID YOU KNOW i raised an orphan lamb before in my garage? had to get up at 6am every morning to bottlefeed that motherfucker for weeks. iz true.

i like baked beans but never used to when younger. i hatehatehate them when they even go slightly cold. can't touch em. i live off pasta and assorted vegetables on my other poor days but it gets me super fat. also, i had no vegetables. so beans it was. i may make something better this evening though just to redeem myself.

I didn't make any Chrismas dinner (or lunch or anything...), but I did want to make something special for me anyways. I found my really really old recipy collection and found this broccoli/carrot paté recipy so I thought I'll give it a try.

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/2198/preparingjo3.jpg

Boil carrots until soft, mix with eggs, some creme fraiche (something like double cream?) and some salt, drain and when cooled, make into puré. Boil broccoli and some leek but not too soft, drain, add eggs, creme fraiche, salt, black pepper and some grounded nutmeg, make into puré.

Take a ovenform (or whatever you call it), line it with clingy plastic and brush with oil. Scoop half the broccoli stuff in the form, then the carrot stuff and then the rest of broccoli.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/1797/oljams4.jpg

Put tinfoil over, bake in waterbath for 1 hour, 170° C.

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/728/ovenyq6.jpg

The result was a bit dissappointing, it wasn't as solid as it was supposed to be, and the taste was very bland. In the olden days they hadn't heard of herbs and it would've been much better without nutmeg.

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/3842/xmasdindingt5.jpg

hey, spanks!

weeelllll it is a tried and tested method.

first, use some good potatoes like maris pipers or desiree. par-boil them while a roasting tin of olive oil is heating up in the oven. when the potatoes are boiled, shake them about a bit so they get quite fluffy in the pan. scratch the outsides with a fork lightly (this is secret part 1 to what makes them crispy). when the oil is HOT, take out of oven and put in 2/3 garlic cloves (or more/less to suit your taste) and fresh rosemary. put in potatoes and turn them around in the oil to make sure they are covered. finally, put a light dusting of preferably semolina or, failing that, flour (secret part 2) - fine baking flour - over the top of the potatoes. maybe you should do this before they actually go in the oil, but whatever turns you on. place in oven for 40 odd minutes until golden. turn them maybe once.. if they're done right there really shouldn't be any need to keep rotating but it doesn't hurt.

et voila! fantastico!

I just picked some rosemary from the greenhouse today (got a recipy for beetroots with chevré and rosemary) so if the ground ain't frozen yet (the weather's upside down here, there should be loads of snow and it's +5-10 Celsius during daytime....) I have to dig up my last potatoes. They're maybe not quite right tho, they're quite flour-y.

so, a couple of weeks ago i had my own personal burns supper with a vegetarian haggis. burns supper, if you don't know, is where lots of scottish people get together to celebrate the poetry of robert burns, eat haggis, drink whisky and generally get really pissed to go scottish dancing.

i did that, minus the whisky and dancing and, you know, people.

i got a vegetarian haggis because a normal haggis is eugh - sheep's stomach stuffed with sheep innards, vegetables, suet, oatmeal etc etc. the veggie one just excludes the sheep heart and liver and what not. blaaah! it's sort of like.. spicy vegetable-y porridge. but.. nicer. you can't really do it justice.

here is the haggis. on the left:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_4154.jpg

you are meant to 'toast' the haggis at your party. someone has to know this poem. for integrity's sake (if not for the fact i failed to do it at my own burns supper), here it is. i am bored:

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin'-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o need,
While thro your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An cut you up wi ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an strive:
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
The auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
'Bethankit' hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew

As feckless as a wither'd rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,

The trembling earth resounds his tread,

An legs an arms, an heads will sned,

i wish the poem was about stabbing french people :( but it really is just robert burns saying how lovely haggis is. a translation is here (http://worldburnsclub.com/begin/address_to_a_haggis.htm). actually, the translation sort of makes it more confusing

so i made some casserole tonight. it's not too exciting i'm afraid. but i had to use up the stewing beef and i got hella bored waiting for that shit to go tender, man. it'll be better tomorrow night, i'm sure.

ingredients. on a magazine. not my magazine. but, sssh, SECRET! the man on the cover of it is GAY, don't tell anyone. he's a lead singer of a rock band! crazy!

wow, this looks really watery because it was before i added gravy granules mustard etc etc:

finished product still a tad bit whatever but eh. that's why i served it with rice. there were potatoes in the casserole so it's like HELLO CARBS! but i couldn't think of anything else. normally i would eat it with a baked potato if there weren't, um, some potat-age in the product already.

serve with flatmate and wine. can you tell why i paid £5 more for a bottle of wine then i normally do, hah? not including the fact it's 15%! 15%! how do australians stay upright? oh, scottie 2 hottie has a cigarette burn on his hand :( or leprosy!

While working in a prison I've seen way more than that put into ramen noodles.

Inmates would all bring their stuff they bought from the canteen and sit at at table and mix it up all together.

Clams
vienna sausages
honey
mayo
mustard
bread
bacon bits
sardines
canned clams

All put into a huge bowl.

And Nastee, that's some good lookin stew!!

How long does it take to cook sausages? A long time if you forget to turn the hotplate on. Yes, the pan is still stained from the deep fried peanut butter incident. No amount of scrubbing or chemicals have helped. I like to put them on low and let 'em burn.

After they are done, add:

i only marinated for a few hours then yeah put them in the oven. i also baste while cooking. the outside is a little tough yeah, but the inside is good. i suppose i like my chicken tough, otherwise i suppose you could just grill it?

i know many people can't deal with fruit in their main mean but i'm a big fan. apricot chicken, pork with apple sauce, lychee and prawn salad, etc. works best with white meats i guess. i draw the line at pineapple on pizza. really the mango just soaks up the salad dressing and isn't overly sweet at all. but if you left it out, no big deal.

i should have added more chilli yes. the chilli wasn't even hot? stupid supermarket chilli. is green hotter than red?

unfortunately, i had to use some frozen ones from good ole tesco, but they were quarterpounders, at least, and fucking delicious!

et voila! serve on toasted wholemeal bun (lolz, bun is 'artistically' half off because, well, i couldn't find no large burger buns anywhere and the burger was like 40% larger than the roll!) with mayonnaise (of course), grilled cheese, non grilled cheese, onion (perhaps not as thickly sliced as i tried em, ha!) and chilli and tomato relish. gherkins, too, if you have them, but the lesbian forgot em! also a bit of coleslaw and cherry tomatoes, feta and olives on the side.

this is how you make a bacon sandwich.

first, take your (UNSMOKED) bacon and trim it of most of the fat:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_4491.jpg

grill it to your taste. me, i like sort of crispy.
place it on fucking TOASTED pieces of multigrain bread. on one piece, spread mayonnaise. on the other, spread some legendary brooooon sauce. put salad leaves on the mayonnaise side, and put the bacon on top. do try not to get so engrossed in conversation that you forget about the bacon:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_4509.jpg

add sliced tomatoes, put brown sauce slice of bread on top, slice:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_4510.jpg

pose with it in various photo opportunities:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_4511.jpg

i win. you lose.

thoroughly scottish food ftw.

me, i made square/lorne sausages for lunch for the boy. scottish people, what exactly makes these sausages and not burgers, hmm? because it doesn't have a skin. and (i think) these use the same meat. someone fill me in here. i r confused. the only thing which differentiates them from burgers is their, er, shape.

for the uninformed, you will be horrified to learn this is what they look like uncooked:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_4977.jpg

then i slammed a holocausted fried egg on top and poured some brown sauce (TM) on it unlovingly. look at that. i didn't even make any sort of concerted effort to centre the egg. just threw it on top in an explosion of yolk and broon sauce. btw, he had both rolls, i didn't.
