Joe Strummer, from The Clash. Y'know, a pretty celebrated punk band. The only band that matters.

Yeesh. Four years already?

I wish they'd never broken up.

I'll elaborate:

Wow -- Strummer has been dead for four years already. Time crawls much more quickly than it used to.

Parenthetically, I wish The Clash had never broken up. It would've been interesting to see if they pursued their rock/dub/funk/jazz/rap/punk/beat hybrid further or if they came out the other side or what. I think they broke up too soon; it doesn't feel like their work was finished.

I met Mick Jones last year and even though I am not a massive Clash fan, I still peed my pants (not literally though)

And about a month after that I literally walked into him and Alan Wass (of awful band Left-Hand) coming around a corner in Camden. Slightly embarassing.

You should've kicked his ass for being mean to Wendy James when they were together

Me too! Actually I was playing Xray style when I heard of him passing away, felt totally spooky!

I have always been a huge Clash fan, actually back in 1979 me and my sister hitchhiked to the capital (like 600km) to see the Buzzcocks and went to a record store and found out the gig was cancelled... :( The guy behind the counter said "that wasn't unusual, even the Clash had cancelled" and nodded towards my Mick Jones badge! :p
Luckily they played that summer at Ruisrock festival and I got some great pics of them! (as well as of Joe at Brixton Academy in 1984 and backstage at Hultsfred in 1988.)

Tomorrow there's a tribute night "Hey Joe!" at Debaser with loads of Swedish indie-stars playing and I'm gonna go there.

I got to Berkeley one time (from Sacramento) to find that Lou Reed had cancelled. But Berkeley was securing the hatches for a riot, so it wasn't really his fault. Boards were being secured over windows, etc.

I won't lie, and I'm not ashamed, but shortly before Strummer died, I wasn't all that familiar with Strummer's 'other' project(s); The 101ers, solo Strum & the Latino Rockabilly War, The Mescies, etc. (But I do remember Chef Aid!) I just didn't pay much attention. Stupid me. Shame.

Anyway, I agree with abcdefz. It (still) feels as though they hadn't actually FINISHED their career as The Clash. When I listen to them (and here I go sounding like a wannabe, "I WAS BORN IN '77, FUCK YOU" punk), but.. It wasn't my era, and the complete opposite of bis and J-pop, but sometimes I feel as though I was, uh, 'around'. In that era, but not at the same time:confused: A sense of nostalgia, I guess. :"\

I love The Clash with all of my heart. Something about them gives me the chills.

I was into the Mescaleros before his death (wasn't aware of 101ers, but that stuff wasn't even released properly, let alone widely released, until '05 anyways) and when news hit that he died, it really took me aback. Almost the same impact as when Kurt Cobain died and similar circumstance later when Johnny Cash died.

He was just warming up and continuing some unfinished Clash business with those albums, that it hit me hard.

BTW, anyone get the reissue to his soundtrack work for "Walker"? It's mostly instrumental Latin music, but it's lovely!

Since I YouTube'd up some Clash, I better do the same for Mescaleros!
