Hey, so I've been wondering about this for a while. Is there any interview or etc where Kathleen Hanna mentions how she feels about some of the older, sexist Beastie Boy songs like Girls? She's a big feminist and I've always wondered how she feels about that. Anyone know?

what means feminist ?
In Kasachstan , we treat the womans like a horse , we give them a little Box to live and feed them twice a day , so when we want to have fun we let them out jumping around an dhave sex time :)
is that feminismus ?

It's funny, I can bring up civil rights and no one will make a degrading joke. I can bring up gay righst issues and no one will make degrading jokes. When I bring up feminism or womyn rights I ALWAYS see something I assume is a joke that's degrading and dehumanizing.

i'm not entirely sure, but it's very clear that being with kathleen has changed horovitz a lot. i think all that matters is that they've changed their opinions.

There you go!!!! great!
I'm a fanatic kathleen's fan, but i've haven't found nothing like this till now. she often speaks about how was difficult to be a riot and have so much people against.
me too think kathleen changeds horovitz.
"girls" is sexist, and dissgusting, but, pity, soooo nice that i can't resiste!

I can't see why anyone would ask her about it. It's like saying to a 50-year old woman "Hey I know your husband's nearly 60 now but once when he was 17 he called women 'bitches!' What do you think about THAT?!"
It's kind of a moot point.

Yeah, but the average young guy doesn't tour around the world with women in cages either.
And isn't moot one of those words that just always sounds funny. :D

The point is he's grown up now. Most people do and say stupid shit when they're young. At least you could tell he was joking. Personally I don't see why Kathleen would have any opinion on it at all.

Well, in 'I Wish I Was Him' she sort of makes fun of a dude (or at least he sounds like a joke to me) and says he likes the Beastie Boys. BUT...it's a Ben Lee cover, so she didn't write it. I believe her version is meant to be ironic, though, since she says something like 'he thinks he can be a better girl than me.' It was dedicated to Evan Dando.
And I swear I read an interview with Tobi from Bikini Kill where she made some generalization about the type of guys who listen to the Beastie Boys. But maybe that was Alisson from Bratmobile? Either way, it was *ages* ago. You should have asked me when I was 14 and obsessed with all things riot grrl and queercore. ;)
Ask Matt Wobensmith...he'd know.

My opinion is that probably....stay with Kathleen changed a little Horovitz's point of view about a few things but....consider also that when Girls came out. he was 20... and now he's 40....maybe he's a little more mature... does it make sense?

Yeah, exactly. And I really like the Beastie Boys and they seem like nice people, but I don't feel sexism is something that should be dismissed as a phase because he was young. I don't feel the reaction would be the same if this was racism.

Do you have a problem with that spelling? Better yet, do you even know the origins of using that spelling?

Right... because no one talks about the life of the Beastie Boys on here.
And yes, it is relevant to me as a feminist. I assume since he's with her he must feel differently about sexism and how damaging it is, BUT I would rather not assume and have a real answer from an interview or something. If he is truely a sexist I don't want to support him.
You should join some of the Le Tigre forums on the internets. The topic has been discussed often.
Thanks, I'll do that. Do you know of any in particular?
Anyway, my point of this thread is not to debate about the past of the Beastie Boys. I've seen it addressed a million times on here. I just want to know the answer to my question.

Yeah, how dare we spell women different (wimmin, wymyn, womyn, etc) in a forum of a band that's known to deviate from conventional English spellings. Ha.
You all don't listen to much rap or speak street slang, do you?
I'm all for letting people identify as whatever they see fit. If it is an attempt to feel empowered through changing the spelling of 'women' (as spelled it means 'of men'...I can get with a woman not wanting to be defined as such) let them be and respect it. People get defensive over the stupidest shit.
As for the Beastie Boys dismissing the early sexism, yeah I've seen a ton of interviews where Adrock, specifically, dismisses the old sexist attitudes. If someone was sexist, racist (as somebody drew a comparisson), homophobic, etc...you gotta give them room and let them change. If not...what's the point of pointing it out? I think it's VERY important to call people on their shit, but if they do the work to change...let them. That's one of the most amazing things somebody can do! Don't haunt them with old news and past hang-ups.
But in defense of the person who started this thread...I gotta say I'm a bit curious to hear what *Kathleen* has to say about the old Beasties songs, too. Not because I think it's my business, but I grew up admiring the woman and I'd be curious. I used to respect her opinion. Just like I'd like to hear Yauch talk about how he justifies being all conscious and progressive yet works with Bad Brains who dismiss a whole bunch of people (and revel in it) based on their affectional/sexual orientation.
Hey, yo...feminists are rad.

I'm a middle-aged woman and long-time feminist. Of course my fellow feminists can express themselves how they see fit, even though they sometimes appear silly to me. Fashions cycle back so if womyn is making a comeback I'll just have to live with it -- like I lived with the revival of ponchos a couple of years ago. :)
Maybe it's another issue where we have a regional difference. I live in a very liberal city (as does youngremy). I also work in a male-dominated profession. I do not mean to be condescending, but focusing on words instead of real power seems fairly quaint. If you folks are young womyn, then I'm excited to see the passion for the cause and I encourage you to keep it up whereever you live.
In the past, I've found some of Kathleen's interviews embarrassing but I've always been glad she's out there rattling cages, and she's said a few very brave things in public that I'm thankful for.
I'd be happy if Yauch would respond to the Bad Brains question though.

I'm a 30-ish (ha) dude that's been active in feminist communities for about 15 years now. I've always seen women spelled various ways the entire time I've been conscious. Around here I don't think it's a trend...just some people do it, and some don't. I don't think anybody was focusing on the spelling of the word other than those that had hang-ups and felt the need to take swipes. The person who used it did it in passing, unemphasized.
And I think language is powerful. As a linguist, I understand the power words and symbols hold. I also have my own opinions about the way language is used and co-opted, but I think it's all personal and that's cool. I don't think it changes anything on a grand scale, but if it can make someone feel a little less trapped...right on.
I agree that Kathleen's said a lot of embarrassing things. When the whole riot grrl thing was happening 15 years back, I just thought it was all cool...but I look back at it now and there was a lot of sensationalism. By everybody. I still think that riotgrrl (and queercore, which was pretty much fluid with riotgrrl) was important and awesome.
And the last time I saw Le Tigre, I thought it was a great show with great lyrics, but there was *one* remark that made me want to puke (I don't want the feminist haters to use it as a weapon against feminists, so I'm not gonna say what she said). My friends I was with were equally annoyed, and one of them hated the rest of the show. It was so fucking offensive and generalized and I felt horrible that some of the kids were either eating it up thinking it was 'cool' or totally turned off and wrote off everything else they were about. Sucks when that happens. But we're all people (I honestly think even she might have been embarrassed), and overall I really like what she's about for the same reasons you mentioned. Shakes things up. And you gotta love getting down to feminist jams with beats as sweet as Le Tigre's.
Nice to meet you, Documad! Always nice to be among cool feminists. I've got yr back. :)

My 2 cents on this
99% of you nerds eat it up whenever a personal thread about one of the Beasties shows up (very few people ever say some shit like "who care's about their personal lives" when one of you is talking about stalking Mike D at his yoga class) so don't act like that's why you're trying to belittle this thread. What it really comes down to is that some of you frail little boys are threatened by shit like this so you act defensively. When somebody is kicking your ass, of course you want it to stop, so that's why you see all these kiddos trying to kill the thread.
