You may remember Palin said she put her predecessor's plane up on ebay. Which she did.

The problem is that McCain distorts the facts. Today he said she sold it on Ebay and sold it for a profit. Here's an article that checked up on the story and found that they took it off Ebay and sold it through a traditional brokerage, at a loss. I wonder whether he knew the facts and lied...or if he assumed they sold it for a profit and just made shit up that sounded good. Either way this just an example of a career politician.

Alaska state jet didn't fly on eBay

From CNN Correspondent Christine Romans

Since being named as Sen. McCain's running mate, Gov. Palin has mentioned several times that she put a government plane up for sale on EBay — including during her speech before the GOP convention.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin bolstered her fiscal-conservative credentials early in her term by putting her predecessor's state jet up for auction online.

"That luxury jet was over the top," she told Republican National Convention delegates when she accepted the party's vice presidential nomination Wednesday night. "I put it on eBay."

Since Palin was chosen as Arizona Sen. John McCain's running mate last week, the story has become a cornerstone of the Republican effort to paint Palin as a reformer who took on her own party establishment.

"How many saw her speech a couple of nights ago? Wasn't it fabulous?" McCain said Friday during a campaign stop in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. "You know what I enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was purchased by her predecessor and sold it on eBay — and made a profit."

But it turns out the twin-engine Westwind II was a tough sell on the Web — and the state eventually pulled it offline and sold it through an ordinary brick-and-mortar brokerage, for a loss, a spokeswoman said Friday.

"Governor Palin has been correct in saying that she put the plane on eBay," McCain campaign spokeswoman Maria Comella told CNN. "They did end up selling it for $2.1 million. but not on eBay."

Palin's predecessor, Frank Murkowski, bought the jet for $2.7 million in 2005. The following year, Palin unseated Murkowski in the state's Republican primary and became governor: Upon taking office, she wanted to unload what former aide Meg Stapleton called "a symbol of corruption."

Stapleton told CNN that Murkowski paid too much for the jet, and that it was costing taxpayers money just sitting in the hangar.

"Eventually you had to concede and say, 'How often are we going to pay these bills and waste more state dollars?' " she said.

When putting it on eBay failed, aircraft broker Rob Heckmann was called in to sell the jet. Businessman Larry Reynolds bought the five-passenger jet for sold for $2.1 million. And Reynolds is now seeking another $50,000 from the state for unexpected maintenance issues with the aircraft.

The part where they lied about selling it on ebay and
the part where they lied about making a profit on the sale.
Both parts of the two-part story were untrue.

It's not the biggest deal in the world, but there seem to have been a tremendous number of lies in the two big speeches she's given since becoming the VP candidate. Every time she tells a lie about her past, a bunch of people who live in Alaska call up the press to tell the real story.

Were splitting hairs.

It was put up for sale on Ebay. I'm not really shocked that it didn't actually got sold on there.

...and perhaps if you consider that she was saving the cost of having to store and maintain the aircraft and the salary of a pilot to fly it, I guess you could make the case of "making a profit".

Either way, it's not as if she went out and spent 2.7 mil on it herself and sold it six months later for 2.1 mil. which would show her as financially irresponsible. She was given the keys to the thing upon being sworn into office, along with the limo that she also got rid of because she thought it was a gross representation of excess.

I think that's pretty Punk Rock.

I have no problem with her letting someone sell the jet. She would have been foolish to use it. It's the lying about the facts to make a better soundbite on the national stage that bothers me. Like how she shut down the bridge to nowhere. Except that she didn't. And except that she kept the money in her state instead of turning it back. Again, I don't blame her for keeping the money in her state. I blame her for misleading the american people about her record.

And of course there is that old the double standard. If Kerry or Obama were to lie about facts . . . .

It's not the biggest deal in the world...but McCain said the Ebay story was what he "enjoyed most" about her speech the other night and then complete distorts the facts to make it sound better than it was.

As far as splittling hairs Rob$, the more I think about McCain's flat out lie, the more is disturbs me. This ebay thing is the prime of example of him kinda knowing a little bit, looking you in the eye, and adding a few extra untrue details. It's the principle. If he loved this little story so much, he would have taken 5 minutes to get the real details and told the real story.
