View Full Version : does any of the music you listen to give you a false representation of yourself?

music tends to represent the fan of said music. i've noticed that a very large portion of the music i listen to is discretely about drugs or conjured up in the haze of habitual/lifestyle drug use. this tends to make people think im some sort of immence stoner. which is very false.

my dad probably thinks im on coke and/or pills when i play drum and bass in my room which im not. same goes for dubstep
I get pretty regular ribbing about being as close to a pothead as you can get without actually being one.
This guy, an asshole ex-roomie of mine even started a rumor that I was smoking weed with highschool kids through that youth program I did in college.

Everyone assumes because I listen to a lot of hip-hop that I'm some kind of gangsta.
Oh wait, I am.

If one were to see my favorite playlists one would think that I dance at clubs more than I do. I think that mind-numbing dance music is great for when I'm writing. Emotional music with stunning lyrics or melody is too distracting.

sometimes because I like canterbury scene prog and frank zappa and some obscure stuff (all of which I found out by accidental means or a friend's recommendation), people think I'm all snobby and know all kinds of information about music. but I don't really, I'm just decisive and opininated about what I like. I know some, more than your everyday girl on the street, but I can barely remember the names of albums and songs, or who produced what or who was talking about who in the liner notes, blah blah blah.
I do have a knack for recognizing what year/era stuff comes from and have a good memory though, so I can hang with the music snobs. when I find myself in a boring go-nowhere music conversation with some jerk, usually I just end up telling them that I don't know what they're talking about and bring up some other band that they haven't heard of (either a friend's band or something I make up) and then they feel bad about themselves and I win because they're not willing to risk their pride by questioning me. they get all, "yeah, I mean, I think I've heard of them..."
it's been a long time since I've had to hang out with those kinds of people though. jesus, I am so stoned right now.

I like Bon Jovi too much to be a music snob.

My family and a large portion of my friends think I'm some kind of closet pill-popping raver because I listen to alot of electro stuff and go out 3-4 times a week.
I'm just social.

I agree that a large section of a person's musical tastes will vary depending on how social they are. Somebody who has never been to a club isn't going to be bumping Akon while they're getting ready to leave the house.
Initially, I was thinking collar-poppers, but that wouldn't work. Anyone who's ever sported that or god forbid, still does, is in fact, a homosexual.
And emo-hair. (Just dudes)

The past few years I really got into Bruce Springsteen, Big Time. I joined a few boards and went to several shows. I was from the year 2003-2008 completely immersed into Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River. I even incorporated my NYC trip last summer to be at the Meadowlands for Springsteen's last show there (fucking 5th row).
He seemed to evoke a real sense of justice, coolness and working class justice in his songs and his whole banter. Now he has of all things signed an exclusive with Wal-Mart (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10811413) and is playing every major venue he can. He is really just an entertainer, who works whatever angle will get him to his goal, tons of money and adulation from everyone. I sort of knew this, but wow I can hardly relate to that.
So now, after all that happy horse shit, here I am knocking his ass off the pedestal and moving on with my lesson learned. Springsteen is not on welfare or an immigrant, he's a multi-millionaire who contrives his image. Which sure, so do many others, but he's gone hokey with this Wal-Mart thing. That's fucking dorky as all get out. It doesn't represent a type of honesty I'm trying to live.

When someone rides in my car for the first time they are turned off by my music cuz all I play is the classical station. They kind of half laugh like I have the shit playing in an ironic way but when I just stare at them and say whats your problem then the rest of the drive is kinda awkward.
That coupled with the psycho vibe I exude plus the civil war era uniform I wear pretty much ensures my freak social status.

^^ same here with the Classical. My stereo is tempermental in the winter so I usually have my stereo on NPR.
I just found some nice classical compilations at the dollar store including a kick ass Spanish Guitar compilation.
Other than that being a slight shock to some who know me, my musical interests have always been quite mixed.

i don't know if i'd call it a ribbing, but i seemingly give off that vibe a lot.
but when i talk about any kind of music that the person i'm talking to isn't into, they usually give me that "you listen to that crap?" look and i hate it but i usually end up changing the topic to some genre they like.
