I wasn't happy about the tax hike, it pretty much erased the meager raise I received in december.
However, I don't really see how it relates to an increase in unemployment. I know it could contribute to a decrease in purchasing, which decreases consumption, which leads to losses in production and then the people who do the producing. But it could also just be a natural fluctuation as the economy settles out. I know business is good where I work, because we offer quality and we're rising to the top of the industry. So, in a way, it kind of shakes people up...and those who falter will fail. And hopefully, real quality of workmanship, and honesty will emerge out of the dust. Isn't that ultimately the american way?
Anyway, not too many people are happy with Quinn here. He took over for a total weirdo (Blagojevich), then was officially elected because the republican candidate was awful. So, we're just kind of stuck with him, and he seems like a decent guy who's trying to do the right thing. but I think he's out of his league and not really in control. It's a hard job, these are difficult times. Just have to wait til the next election, and hope there's someone better.

I always like the idea of cutting government spending and encourage private business... but what the fuck, maybe the government should go into the shoe business and try to compete and sale shoes so they can pay the bills. Ill. could have the first government ran dollar stores and supply everyone with toothpaste and condoms and candy. How about goverment funded porn? I think its already been done.
the federal government lowers taxes, unemployment increases
illinois raises taxes, unemployment increases
i guess the only reasonable conclusion to draw is that liberals are always wrong about everything

I think problems with Illinois's economy have been much longer than the recent tax increases. Illinois had terrible state budget management in the past few years. Everyone knew the Illinois economy sucked and that the state government wasn't filling its employee pension funds or paying vendors. The state budget was a hotbed for budgetary gimmicks to push tough decisions into the future. This financial mess was largely the fault of the state legislature's failure to act sooner.
There are dozens of articles that mention California and Illinois as the two states most likely to default on their debt.
Plus, this study is basically looking at two long-term variables (tax and unemployment rates) in a very short-term window. At least this is noted as a caveat on the page, if viewers take the time to read beyond the graph. An economist can shift the numbers and graphs around so much to prove any point of view.
Make no mistake about it, the current governor's actions have something to do with the state of the economy; the state is still suffering. I'm glad I live in Michigan - our debt is looking better and better each day :) But still, I hope for the best in the Midwest.
