Wow... You know you are old when you know everyone nominated for the Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame... and rocking have of them on your iPod... or should I say mix-tape

Although the Beasties deserve the recognition and a nomination, and I think they will definitely make it in someday... just don't feel the time is right. Got so much in store for us I hope.

I don know bout you but I see the RnR HOF as a swan song kinda thing.
Is it not???

Anyone ever been?

My friend and I took a road trip to go see it. Fun times.

I think Adam H said something along the fact that he doesn't want to win it because it means as a band they should just call it a day.

It would be nice to see them get some recognition among their peers. Beyond that, it won't change how I, and probably you, feel about them. They're already tops in my book! (y) (y)

I can't shake this feeling that people who aren't into them never got past the LTI days. Local radio here only plays three of their songs, all from LTI, and I'm sure you know which three I'm talking about. I still love it when I hear them on the radio, but play something from another era already... :(

Luckily Beastie’s are not alone. A lot of older bands don’t get their new music played. This generation is only focused on the newbies. I think for the BB’s though that when they do start performing again music fans will embrace them! I mean they are phenomenal performers and when they are able to perform this new material on TV or wherever it’s gonna be on!! I think people are ready to see them back on top.

And I know many here think this is cheesy but requesting their new music on your local radio station does help. I think we should do that when they get back together.

I know it sounds lame to many of you to involve with things like this, but vote if you can. Plus I just hate seeing them right next to Donna Summer on the bottom! Yeah I know fan support is not cool. RARA!!

well, the RnR hall of fame isn't as exclusively Rock n Roll as it's name implies. plus I could count all of her hits on one hand (and that's being generous).

it smells like politics to me; on paper, her name looks good on that list. but is she really "legendary"? really?

more power to her, but ultimately the bboys' catalogue and influence blows her legacy to bits.

Thats what I said, I'd love for the beasties to win, but if not, i'd say that Joan Jett deserves that spot a whole shit load. Her whole ora is rock n roll, her style always stood out more, and it wasnt even mainstream or typical. Shes true rock. Good luck Joan!

Well the Rock and Roll hall of fame is for those artists that have influenced or impacted the music industry in a major way which I agree Joan Jett is definitely an icon, somebody everybody identifies with rock and roll. However, Beastie's impact on the industry is bigger because they did more than just play music. Their charity work and awareness with the music festivals were a huge memorable part of the entire 90's decade, and I know that alone sets them apart. Not many bands have that sort of experience under their belts.

The Joan Jett fans are just more vocal and it is a "fan poll." In the end it is the Rock and Roll committee who will decide which bands will make it this time. I just hope the Beasties get in soon! ;)

and you think the general public could name a single Joan Jett song other than "I love rock'n'roll"?

maybe "cherry bomb"? (though that was a different one of her bands than is nominated)

just cause her music sounds more like rock'n'roll than the bboys' doesn't mean she should automatically take it. let's not forget that Grandmaster Flash and Run DMC are in the RnR Hall of Fame, so all bets are off when it comes to favoring true-blue rockers over the latter. i mean, they completely dwarf her career at every turn, from record sales, to crossover success, philanthropic clout, staying power, and just overall musical range.

she may very well deserve induction, but there is no question who is more significant between the two, IMO.

Well the president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame said that the hip hop artist nominees represent the spirit of what they celebrate in the hall of fame. It's evolved and the only real requirements is that the artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination...

And whether the Beasties care of not, IMO it's still a great honor. They work hard and deserve it.

Sorry, that probably sounded rude. What I mean is that the real honour is being able to make the music they want for people like us who love it. The HoF is just stupid industry stuff.

Plus, on a sillier note, more than ever Adrock's throwaway comment about them quitting if they get in is a real possibility.

Anyhoo, I think I saw a interview were Adrock wasn't too worried about getting in, because it's like saying it's a wrap on the band.

Honestly I just think that a back and forth discussion on who is more worthy to get in the RRHF is pointless. All great artists. Whatever happens, happens.

I am bummed out actually if they do get in. If Yauch isn't well then he won't be there to accept with his bandmates. Or I know some of you say Horovitz stated his annoyance by getting in so maybe they won't embrace it all that well. :/

Discussion seems to focus on how an induction generally boosts sales/interest for a band. If they were to get in it would be good timing should there be further follow-on activity planned. Like how TMR was nominated for a Grammy apropos of nothing - just an exercise to build buzz which was derailed by circumstances.

Problem is, I don't think there is anything further planned. That, and the HoF can eat a dilz

(y) Very true.

Saw Luscious Jackson, Cey Adams and a few others who know the Beastie's all tweet their excitement about it so I think it's gonna be okay.

Oh and I guess I'm going. Some other fans I know from online plan to go and asked me and I said yes. ;)

Edit: Post on their facebook is so sweet. I can tell they are honored by it.

We're in the rock and roll hall of fame? That's f----n' crazy and awesome ! While we are very proud of the music we make, we have to acknowledge the inspiration from our families, friends and musicians like the slits, bad brains, x-ray spex, the treacherous three and too many others to possibly name. And most of all, we give thanks to New York City and the world of musical influence it provided for us.

Go! I know girl, it's hard. I bought them for other reasons, I need to be on a plane traveling somewhere so I have other motives. Just do what's right for you. I have a feeling it least Mike and Horovitz would go. They've attended other honoree shows so those two I expect to see if at the very least.
Thanks yo! Its like a guessing game, y'kno, i wish they would let people know if they are attending or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, usually there are people who post the news for them but I guess they've just never been interested in that sort of thing. So we will just have to continue the guess game on all things Beastie. What can you do, just go with it and see how it all pans out. With lack of updates and Mike D doing his little festival thing I am not expecting anything at this point. Although its quite strange that a tweet today was sent out by somebody close to their studio saying they could hear them through the walls. I mean the music or their voices as if insinuating they were rehearsing. I dunno its probably all in their mind. If they were rehearsing I doubt it has anything to do with the ceremony. :p

Uh let me find the tweet and I'll post it here.

Also this article states that the Beastie Boys have declined any interviews about the Rock Hall and the Hall of Fame refuses to answer any questions about then and who will and not attend. I doubt it has to do with them not thinking that they are better than this event. I really do think it's cuz of Yauch, but we'll see.

Hmmm the article is certainly inconclusive regarding any details. I've been disappointed by my own high hopes over the last three years, it's a case of being happy they're not showing up because it is the most likely scenario. Still, nothing is pointing either way on attending/not attending (based on that link, anyway). Thanks for sharing.

Just hope for the best for MCA. It's sad for us fans but it's even harder for his family.

Even if they aren't going to perform, it's quite a feat that the three of them have stayed together and remained friends for so many years. Guns N Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers have many former band members, people that rotated in for an album or a tour and left.

Random and not really relevant to the sad news but just to clarify....it's on the 14th of April...THIS Saturday at 8pm on HBO. But is it 8pm eastern time? I'm in LA (west) so it'd help if anyone can clarify...it'd suck if I'm waiting for it to be on at 8 and then I find out I missed it 3-4 hours ago....thanks

Regarding the sad news, though, I'd be okay if they didn't even show up. (quite the opposite, though, if I was actually there) Just a montage of their history or an interview would be nice! But them to be there and accept the award would be heartwarming. Performing would be the best thing in the world, but if Yauch is even slightly ill....I wouldn't condone it.

I am going to have a fucking heart attack. Bad news, good news, bad news good news. Ugh. Ya'll gonna make me loose my MIND up in HERE!

All I can say is that if somebody says he was in bad shape they could have easily just saw him during one of his treatments. Those things are nasty but you do recover from them each time. The way he looked at the Bard ceremony was the worse I saw him. :(

On that note, I am not sure what "me and the boys" means. It could just mean Mike and Horovitz. I hope Yauch is going, not to go on stage or perform, but if he is traveling around then he is not bed ridden and that my friends is the best news we could get out of the whole fucking thing.

It will be okay girl. MCA attended the FFYR screening in front of a packed room of fans, he attended Cannes where media was present, he went to that Bard thing with tons of people and he knew they'd get photos.....so perhaps he will be fine with it least joining his bandmates on stage for a speech. ;)

You might hear before me if they are all three there because I will probably already be in my seat! In that case I might have you DM me or something if you hear something first lol.... but if I do I will for sure let you guys know too.

So here are the festivites for the weekend. Under different circumstances I might be excited about going but without the real thing for so long tribute bands are beginning to annoy me.

In spite of myself I'm still a little optimistic. The rumours about him being cured were exaggerated, too. Positive vibes either way. Plus I don't believe in the illusion of democracy surrounding this process; it seems possible that their induction had been a standing item since the original planned album launch - as, say, part of the original 2009 plan for global domination ( along with the apps and the other buzz-stuff). For whatever reason (much like the eventual launch of said album), now is the right time to go ahead with the induction and whatever publicity and buzz that might generate. Hopefully it's for good reasons.

I just think it's more than coincidence that they're being inducted this year, as it's something I certainly feel could have happened in 2010 following the massive Beastie takeover that was planned in the wake of the original HSC launch (such as the iPhone apps and the huge online presence, re-issues in 2009 et al).

I find the Open Letter.... Axl wrote to be highly offensive and disrespectful for a number of reason, some of which having to do with the BB induction in relation to the health issues. I'm not a fan of GnR; I did like Appetite for what is was and when it was, didn't care for it when released but I came to appreciate the rock/punk/rawness of it later. Always thought the Illusion albums to be bloated and pretentious and quite honestly boring. Don't care for the hair thing or the way the members have conducted themselves; although I guess I would pick Slash over Axl because I truly despise Axl and everything he is....and reading his letter actually made me angry at him and his selfishness. The fact they can't put aside whatever for 5 minutes, not appreciating that all 5 are healthy/able/some willing; then on the other side the BB have a real problem, are limited by their sense of self and unified in the fact they won't let the show go on until #3 is ready.

You have to applaud the good people, the smart intelligent unassuming ones who have grown and are mature, who stick to their morals and convictions.

RUN DMC were done when JMJ was gone; the BB's have always sort of emulated them, they will not ever do it again until #3 is able and you have to respect that. Doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice to get an official update instead of reading this 1/2 Black Ops Cryptic nonsense, and 1/2 obsessed and a little over the line groupie stalker sadness.

Beastie's have done DMC so much, so much respect has been paid, it would be so cool if Run and DMC along with either MMM or Hurra did 2 or three of their songs; maybe add Chuck as the 3rd??? i think it would be pretty cool seeing them do Shake Your Rump, or So Whatcha Want...Sure Shot, etc.

I don't mean to be an a**hole, but when did they ever say they WEREN'T going? They said they weren't PERFORMING....going to accept an award is different than performing. If they weren't going at all, I think they would've flat out said that.
Again, don't mean to be a d*ck...I feel bad...I can't imagine having a chance to go and at the last minute cancel...then when the good news comes it's too late. But still, I feel they made it clear....if a bit confusing.

Wow, as a Rush fan (who has seen them over 20 times since 2002) and a Beasties fan, I am abhorred by your comment. Why?

Adam Yauch has cancer which he has been battling since 2009.

No wonder people think many of us Rush fans are unbalanced freaks, because people like you make ignorant comments about a situation you clearly know nothing about.

Get well MCA!

I wonder how they'll edit this because it was 3 hours in when they got to the Beastie induction. Total Beastie segment was 30 minutes. Very well done. Yauch's parents were there. Chuck D and LL did a great job paying tribute. Horovitz and Mike gave very appreciative sppeches to friends, family and everyone that's helped and supported them. Horoviotz read Yauch's note. He said something about John Berry's dad busting in to turn that f'n shit off back in the day. Funny stuff.

Chuck D and LL did a fine tribute to the Beastie's. I loved how the Chili Peppers gave props to them and then mentioned Yauch before their performance. I enjoyed the part where LL said Yauch use to kick him in his chest. lol. I loved Adrocks shout outs to the beautiful Kathleen Hanna and the way he started off Yauch's letter. Mike looked like he wanted to be done with it, or maybe he was nervous... Glad I came for the boys. (y)

Congrats to the beastie boys. Regardless of your feelings towards the RnR HoF, I'm sure it's an honor for the boys themselves and I applaud them. Plus any reason to review and revere their legacy is welcome and justified in my book. Such a rich history demands retrospect and it's something special for your peers to acknowldge such.

Anyone else think the tribute set was a little to LTI heavy? While I love The Roots (I even still like Kid Rock ;)) and they did do the B-Boys a great honor stepping up here, I just think Beastie Boys would have came with a much different set, more devise and representational of their whole catalog and range (Hip-Hop, Alt. Rock, Instrumental & Punk)... if they were able to preform.

I guess I just thought ?uestluv would have understood the Beastie are so much more than LTI

I was exhausted when I wrote that. I didn't mean it to sound like I was saying that. None of us know how it really is. Like I say bad condition could be the facial paralysis and many cancer patients are self conscious about it. Adam has that pretty bad from the photos I last saw. I totally understand if he didn't want to be seen. :/ I hope that's all it is and not that it's "spread." :/ Like I say he could have just had a treatment and it would have taken a toll on him. I wish we knew more. :(

You know, I think something like this is far more personal than I can even imagine, so I completely understand the lack of news. No need to share any of that with me or anyone else. I'm a private person too and I get it. 100%. But I think the lack of news - particularly the lack of news about/at the ceremony - is significant. If he was doing well and it was just a matter of bad timing, recent symptoms from a course of chemotherapy, or something else, I would have expected him or them to at least have said, "OK, Adam's not here, but everything's really going to be alright. Nothing to be alarmed about."

I think feeling like you know what's going on is a substitute for a sense of control, but there isn't anything that can be done about this. I really hope he's well. Like others have said, I can't really describe the impact he's had on me.

And, of course, like every other opinion I've ever had about the future, I could be completely wrong.

Mr. Juice

It was a valiant gesture to have a Beastie Boys tribute at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, but it wasn't entirely satisfying.

Pros:
The Roots are the official house band of hip-hop, so if anyone's gonna be a backing band, I guess it should be them, right? The Beastie Boys also toured with The Roots (and performed with them on Late Night), so there is a connection there.

Kid Rock graced the cover of Grand Royal Magazine and is neighbors with Mike D (who like Kid, also has an affinity for country music).

Cons:
The Roots back everyone, so having them do a Beastie Boys' medley didn't feel unique (something that the Beastie Boys always take great pride in).

Besides Licensed To Ill, Kid Rock's misogynistic lyrics, political leanings, and beer-and-stripper-liefstyle don't gel well with the Beastie Boys' mission statement.

Travie McCoy added some younger/mainstream appeal to the performance, and yes, his band Gym Class Heroes doesn't exist without the Beastie Boys, but it felt like somewhat of a lazy choice, since he was previously plucked to do a Beastie Boys tribute at the 2009 VH1 Hip-Hop Honors Show tributing Def Jam.

It wasn't the Beastie Boys.

I am glad this event came out as a great and intense moment for the fans and the band. I hope they feel they really have been honored.

Thanks for all the links and info, I am happy some of you could attend.

My hope about this very critic situation about Yauch's health is that if he didn't attend, it was more of a decision on his behalf than really the impossibility to go.
Last year he didn't show up with Mike and Adam for the HSCP2 promotion, no radio, no pictures.

Whatever the situation is now, I strongly believe Yauch will be fine.(y)

honestly, I think their choice of people to perform the tribute was borderline insulting.

Okay the Roots, albeit a tired choice, is fine, it makes sense; but Kid Rock? What a dipshit. This guy is all about everything the bboys have been trying to distance themselves from for almost two decades.

And Travis McCoy!?! Bullshit. They couldn't muster a shred of talent for this position? Does the hall forget they (supposedly) represent genuine artists and not the MTV generation of fake musicians? Are they trying to flatter their inductees or embarass them?

Oh well. This post probly reads more angry than I truly am, but I'm just a little shocked at the laziness of these choices. There's a laundry list of better choices. I mean, shit, Chuck D and Ll Cool J were already on hand as it is, that's as decent a enough jumping off point as any.

AFuckingMan! I think even without the MCA thing in the back of my mind I still wouldn't have enjoyed it fully. I thought for sure I would be out of my seat but I sorta just sat there like okay good try. Was not all that impressed with the performance. It also seemed rushed, but then again Hip Hop doesn't get the amount of respect at this award show as the other artists. I love how Chuck D kept saying "one more minute for hip hop" OMG I fucking love Chuck D soo much! Anyway I just thought especially with Adam's thing they would go all out but it was a quick montage and they are off the stage. The night was devoted to Guns N Roses and Chili Peppers. Not that I didn't enjoy those parts. Flea had me balling with his speech!

Oh shit but MMM and the Roots did sound amazing. I had my eyes on them the entire time!

i agree...but kid rock and Mike D are sorta close....so that's probably why he was picked.

that's random, but I guess it justifies a little bit.

after just watching the video, It's also a bit disappointing that of all the dope verses to choose from in their catalogue to fill a 7 minute set, they feature a verse that blatantly promotes carrying a weapon ("42 automatic on my person"), whilst it's no secret the bboys have spoken publicy about nonviolence. "hey guys, we're gonna honor you by glorifying some of your most shameful lyrics on a national stage and reiterating an image you've spent 25 years trying to shed". Gee thanks.

Irresponsible in my opinion.

mike and kid aren't bff's but they do socialize. i already said in another thread that i liked the trax that were picked (except for Sabatoge), but not who portrayed them. i also tweeted my disdain for kid rock when i heard he'd represent them. he's the biggest pimp of hiphop since puff daddy...he hasn't done a rap album since the Polyfuse Method in '94?....stick to country.

The Beasties did a whole article on Kid Rock (before he blew up, mind you) in Grand Royal. They had a lot of respect for him back then at least.

I haven't seen the medley or watched the speeches, I'm holding out for the HBO edited version in HD.

but I tend to agree with the sentiment that choosing LTI heavy material doesn't quite showcase WHO the beastie boys are, as a band, as people, etc.

we are a rabid bunch of fans on their official message board, of course we are going to take that stuff more seriously.

one thing that bothers me is the way the media is reporting that the band pulled out of a performance at the last minute.

again, I think everyone here knew there would be no performance- the medley was always in the works for the last few weeks.

the true fans were just holding out for a glimpse of Yauch. they didn't get it and it is kind of sensitive (insensitive?) that the media doesn't quite get what's going on here.

I still get the notion that everyone thinks the beastie boys are the beer swilling, immature, white boy rappers from the 80's, a tired notion, I know, but unfortunately that's the public perception.

the recap from some of the board members paints a solemn and sincere picture of Mike and Adam H, one that the public never gets to see.

I can't wait to see the footage.

Oh my, I didn't realize the complacency bureau was overseeing this discussion.

My mistake, I'll be sure to submit all of my posts for your approval in the future, for I just couldn't ever live myself were I to offend the honorable pm0ney ever again.

I have failed you bbmb. Please find it in your hearts to forgive me.

I was planning on doing the same thing as you, and wait for the HBO version, since i wasnt able to see it live. However i couldnt stand it any longer, i was going fuckin MAD, so i gave up and watched the shitty version on youtube, yet i still got emotional as ever and swelled up as i saw mike and adam giving their speeches.

Adrock's proud papa Israel shared his thoughts with the medium of facebook-

"taught the kid everything he knows" next to the official plaque

and the simple words "so proud" with a screen shot of Adam up on that stage

honestly, I think their choice of people to perform the tribute was borderline insulting.

Okay, I'm with you on this. I was extremely underwhelmed by the tribute performance. It just seemed way too generic. I don't hate Kid Rock or the Roots, but it didn't work. I thought it was extremely lame when a few years ago Kid Rock kept appearing with Run DMC, and he even appeared on Run's (basically solo album) Crown Royal and DMC's solo album in 2007. I understand why the material was heavily focused on LTI. It remains their most influential and famous record and always will, but it would've been nice to have some more stuff from other albums. There was just nothing special about the performance. What about Q-Tip? De La Soul? The Roots sort of fit the mold but they've been done to death.

Actually, when it's all said and done, the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame doesn't mean that much, in my opinion. It's a nice accomplishment to add to their resume, but who cares what the Hall thinks?

Random piece of Beastie trivia I picked up in Cleveland. The Beasties first performance in Cleveland was at Public Hall (same venue as the induction ceremony) on May 16, 1985 when they opened for Madonna.

As far as the performance...it was ok. I mean it wasn't the Beasties and no one can perform their songs like them. But it was good...

I had my eyes on them the entire time!

i didnt really know who anyone was apart from kid rock. he is kinda pathetic but he looked like he was giviing it his all and if he was up for paying tribute then fair do's. The songs they picked kinda suited him and i dont think it detracts from the honour (which isnt that amazing anyway really) that super cool and influential acts didnt get involved.
