Re: Rick Rubin Wanted Mike D booted?
I've read at least one article on this as well. This was early in the game, before License to Ill. It just goes to show you that they were trying to market the Beasties at that point. Mike was the one who they didn't think was cool enough. Yauch was the one they thought was the most Beastie-like. Notice how Yauch has the solo record in 85. Also notice how Kate got dissed back then as well. They always dance around the whole Kate thing in the interviews. Def Jam was obviously trying to push a certain image and in the end it lead to the Beasties going to capital.

Re: Rick Rubin Wanted Mike D booted?
I thought it was in my 89 SPIN mag. This did have a lot of shit about the relationship between the Beasties and Russel...but nothing about booting Mike out.
This is the one that discussed Chuck D working on the mysterious White House Album. |

Re: Rick Rubin Wanted Mike D booted?
Whaa! That makes no sense whatsoever, out of the three back then it seemed like Mike acted the coolest and most mature, didn't he? I would think Adrock was more of the geek back then though. No no, I'm just kidding he's cool. They're all cool. That rick rubin dude makes no sense, if you ask me he was the uncool one.

they've always had problems with rick. Yauch wanted to quit in '87 after the License To Ill tour. rick dicked them out of a lot of money back them and got shafted by their original contract with def jam. thats one of the major factors to Yauch forming Brooklyn with Darryl Jennifer. they were tired of all the bullshit. but simmons put the pressure on them to get back in the studio with rubin. all of them were hesitant cause they didnt get along with him. mind you, this took place awhile back. who knows, they might all be buddies now.... This might be why Mike has the fewest lines on LTI.

Here's the part about "booting Mike D." "After all these years, they still can't help saying his name--"Mike D!"--with the utmost glee. The others helped create the look of a white kid pimp wearing a Volkswagen hood ornament. But when Rick Rubin suggested that they could do without Mike D, that was the beginning of the end. For Rubin. Mike D. is certainly in charge of his own shit nowadays." |

Re: Rick Rubin Wanted Mike D booted?
This whole thing is a quote from Rolling Stone Aug. 11, 1994 (with the cover where they're all distorted like in a fun house mirror):
Legend has it that the group's split with Rubin had more than a little to do with the fact that Rubin viewed Diamond's musical and business senses as replaceable. "There was a point where Rick probably didn't want me in because I deal with the business side," says Diamond. "Ultimately there was going to be a source of conflict there." Horovitz is less diplomatic. "Rick thinks he knows what's best for everybody," says Horovitz. "Rick was the expendable motherfucker." |

Re: Rick Rubin Wanted Mike D booted?
There's even earlier stuff then that about Def Jam wanting to ditch mike. Some of it might be in that "in their own words" book. I've read so much shit over the past 15 years its hard to remember where I read it.

Re: Rick Rubin Wanted Mike D booted?
Horovitz makes me laugh. In interviews--like in the recent Fuse one--he'll often sit there, sometimes seeming to be of two minds about being there but if you watch him, you'll see that he's listening and that he puts out these expressions that punctuate what the other two have to say. And every now and then he'll throw in a perfectly delivered, deadpan zing.
It's one thing to read their interviews but it's an added bonus to see them happening.
