Default Men's Olympic Hockey Thread

Kazakhstan 2, Sweden 7
Canada 7, Italy 2
Switzerland 0, Finland 5
Germany 1, Czech Republic 4

Slovakia vs Russia is on now
Latvia vs USA later on today

Canada wins gold, hands down. it's gonna be tough, but no one has our teamwork and depth...

there is no women's thread, because there is no competition. Canada just has to show up and they win gold.

wrong on both men's and women's hockey,

USA will win both. the men will have a tough time but gold will be theirs,, women will win rather easily

U.S. and Latvia tied.

It's pretty much evident that the U.S. isn't going very far.

Czech Republic will probably win gold.

Canada will dominate both, as they are doing so far. The women's division is not as equally balanced, though. The Canadian women have outscired their opponents 35-1 so far, and I expect that ratio will remain the same for the rest of the tourny.

My prediction for the Men's medal, according to how I think the top four teams will finish:

Gold-Canada
Silver-Czech Republic (Hasek injury did not help...but Vokoun will lead them)
Bronze-Sweden

The States will not make it into the semi-finals. Their goaltending is terribly weak and their defence is old. They didn't have the ability to beat a team like Latvia (props to Ozlinsch (sp?) for getting in on 2 of their goals) and they will not be able to handle an offensive juggernaut like Sweden or the Czechs. I'm impressed the Germans kept pace with the Czechs, they might be the darkhorses. Slovakia won't go down without a fight.

I was impressed with Italy's performance in the first and early second periods. Unfortunely, once they had the book on Jason Muzzati (which was a bit dusty because he has been out of the NHL for a little while) they filled the net. They had spirit though...If they can manage a couple tight wins against the germans and the swiss, they might squeak in to the quarter finals. I doubt it though, the Swiss have good goaltending and the Germans have this phenomenal defensive pattern set up. If Germany had a scorer they might even be able to push past Finland's weak goaltending. Again, dark horse....

On the bright side, I think we won gold in curling.

Chara and Gaborik are huge assets. they're my dark horses.

finland always has to remind me they can play hockey, i forget every time there's an international event; finns can play.

usa had to rally to tie latvia. take that chelios, you flake.

I think this should be brought to attention. It appears the American women team will not be getting either gold or silver, and didn't win 'rather easily' at all; they were outplayed by a phenomenal goalie in Kim Martin who get into the American player's heads early, and after a deadlocked third and overtime period, were whooped in the shootout. So your prediction was quite off in terms of the women winning the gold rather easily.

Now, on to your 'how ya feeling now canada' comment. Yes, the Canadian men were defeated by a very good and impressive Swiss squad who was fresh off of beating the powerhouse Czechs in their previous game. Fortunetly, Canada is still very much alive in the preliminary rounds, and will make it to the quarter finals, given their wins over the germans and italians. So, with Canada very much alive and well at this stage, I'm feeling pretty good at this stage.

i didnt really know that the swiss had such a solid team. their goaltending was excellent.

so was the goaltending in the usa - slovakia game. that was a fun one to watch. lots of back and forth action, could have been a high scoring affair really.

and its good in a way to see a shake up in the womens end. i mean, obviously i am cheering on my country and all that, but its nice to see more than usa and canada dominating the womens game so much. they need some other squads to start to comp[ete like that.

I hope so, but I won't speak too soon.

In related news, the American men are clinging to the fourth place in their pool. If the Latvians win and the Americans lose the next game, the Latvians advance.

a hard fought gold for Canada
silver for Sweden
i'd like to say Finland gets the bronze, but i think the russians will make a run for it.

USA is still most likely advancing so it dont matter.. you'll have to wait a bit more for your full celebration.
