maybe i'm just not with it, i dunno. maybe i only hear crappy bands. alls i know is i dont likes what i hears

My guess is your talking about the deep throated screaming type of heavy metal? I have to admit myself, I dont like much of that either, the only acception I make with that type of metal is Trivium, but then there's the classic old stuff like Judas Priest, and King Diamond if you dont mind the screaming, but then there's Iron Maiden. They dont scream, and Ozzy. You just gotta look, there's like.. 20 diffrent types of metal.

I can handle the barfing sounds. actaully, I applaud them. it's the melodic 'system of a down' clone vocals in alot of these bands that make me upset, really.

uh, lots of heavy metal bands that sound like they're vomiting. i dunno, i couldn't give you an a to z list.

and it's not just the vomiting ones, the vocals just annoy me in general. it's like if you're at a concert and someone's just yelling in your ear the whole time, and you can't hear the music. i think it just gets in the way, i dunno.

pantera, let's use pantera as an example. maybe it's better live, i don't know.

i probably have a very loose understanding of what "heavy metal" is, so i don't wanna get too picky about the genre name here

edit to encompass the replies after droppin's

i've been listening to some iron maiden songs i have on my computer, i gotta be honest i kinda like that. i like system of a down too (but less so since they started letting the lead guitarist sing more prominently). dragonforce, i kinda like that too.

but really for the most part i think the vocals just kind of get in the way. i like the intensity of the instrumentals, it's fun, but then you have a guy screaming over it and it just doesn't do it for me.

I for one can't stand that lame-ass "metalcore" or "black metal" stuff (where it's basically just a lot of unintelligible yelling over some relentlessly loud and unlistenable music).

My tastes in whatever you'd call "heavy metal" is pretty selective and is pretty much just the cream of the crop (i.e. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Guns 'N Roses, Metallica, etc.)

See I dont much like System of a down, They're ok, but they dont do much for me. i've never heard Dragonforce even though I hear they're good.
If you dont like the screaming you should try listening to maybe, Stone Sour or something like that. I dont know if they're considered "heavy metal" but they're good. I've never really considered the vocals as "vomiting" it doesnt really seem like it to me, but whatever.
I've always been a fan of 80's hair metal myself, Although by today's standards thats no where close to what they consider to be heavy metal now.

i guess i should clarify why i made this thread, i only sort of hinted at the question:

are there any metal bands (again, using the term loosely) with no vocals?

System of a Down I'd place in that ambiguously defined "alternative metal" category...

Pantera is a different type of screaming... but i can understand where you're coming from. songs like Suicide Note pt. 2 \m/ will fuck you up.

Pantera are definately thrash metal, Metallica's early days were thrash metal, Slayer are thrash metal, Anthrax are crap.. hahaha..

Metallica's Black Album is what i consider heavy metal.

it is hard to put a pin on what is heavy metal - all the older older bands; sabbath, some zeppelin, judas priest, iron maiden, they're the original heavy metal... then bands like slayer/metallica/testament just all used their formula and made a U.S. type of heavy metal. which pretty much resulted in Thrash.

edit: thinking about it, Pantera are pretty much the only flawless metal band i can think of. made perfect album after another.

system of a down gets more childish the longer they are around. their first two albums(especially the first) were good. i don't like how the guitarist is taking over.

Yeah I don't know, sometimes that over the top ugly screaming with banshee guitars and insane drumming just works. It almost matches those fucked up moods I get into, sort of makes me feel like listening to wimpy stuff again.

See, i would consider it heavy metal too, same with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, those were the bands that MADE heavy metal, but by today's standards, thats not heavy metal at all, even though those were the bands that pretty much started heavy metal.

I dont know, you want metal that has no vocals? I dont know of any, and the closest I could tell you is Trivium, because a lot of their stuff is just music, but then the vocals are pretty much everything you hate.

a band is not heavy metal if a keyboard is involved... personal opinion.

See my metal thread for recommendations.

Do what I did. Preview as much metal bands as you can read about on the internet. Myspace is a good tool for this, as there are band pages where you can listen to music from. Off the top of my head, check out Falconer, Edguy, Pagan's Mind, Angra, Shadow Gallery, Elvenking, and Ayreon. Some of those are power metal and folk metal bands, but none of it is thrash metal, which is what you were talking about, uncontrollable screaming. I don't care for it myself, but for some reason, I like when the band, Strapping Young Lad scream in such a way. It could have to do with the fact that Devin Townsend is a fucking metal god. :-P

I hadn't gotten around to checking them out, but I watched that, and I liked them. Thanks for the video. Power metal is fun.

you said you dont like it cause you can understand it. but how about rammstein? i cant understand a word they say (well a few) but one reason i like em is cause theyre still really heavy, but the singer does sing, not to bad either. just a suggestion.

you need to listen to post hardcore and post whatever else they wanna make up. There's alot more melodies in the singing. Check out bands like exit 10
