![]() Looks like Vista prices are getting cut 50%, I wonder why?
http://www.informationweek.com/news/...leID=206901018 Anyways just curious what your running, what are the + and - about it if it's something unique or new (Linux, Ubuntu, Leopard, Vista) I'm still running XP sp2 and not many problems considering how much I've packed on this machine (Sam's Club Compaq Presario box pc that rocks) but I'm sure the coming year or two might put a squeeze on my needs. Definitely would like to diversify with a MAC soon. But what I'm most curious about is Ubuntu...anyone using this or used it?

![]() I ran Ubuntu Fiesty on a Pentium 1.2 Ghz Duron processor and it ran surprisingly peppy. I installed Xubuntu on a 400 Mhz Pentium and that also ran pretty well.
Ubuntu/Xubuntu is a wonderful OS for basic internet use and getting familiar with Unix. Its also good for breathing life into old otherwise useless PCs. If you're familiar with Mac OSX its very similar in design.

![]() Ubuntu's fun and all, and I'm totally for open-source software, but if you have some piece of hardware that doesn't have an easy open-source replacement driver available, be prepared to fight hard to get it all working.
I have a laptop with 64-bit architecture and I cannot get flash working in firefox with sound because it's not supported yet. No youtube for me. Honestly, dual boot your machine and play with a new OS or 2 for a while before giving it the final thumbs up. I hate Vista and Leopard. I'm keeping XP for a while.

![]() I'm using Mac OS X Tiger on the family iMac and XP Pro on my laptop. My husband keeps insisting that the kids need their own linux box, but he has yet to move forward with the idea.

![]() I've got Vista on my new laptop. I don't see why everyone hates it, it's a lot like XP to me...except it asks you "Do you want to continue" a lot more, which can be helpful or annoying. Other than that, and the layout, I don't notice many other differences in my daily use.

![]() Yeah I know. But sometimes it's helpful, it's caught virus programs trying to run a few times. I'd say 70% of the time it's annoying, 30% it's useful, so just enough usefulness for me to not want to turn it off.
I should see if there's a "Don't ask me this ever again" button for some of the programs, maybe that'd help.

![]() we're running windows 2000. i just bought myself an ipod nano on the basis that two guys in the flagship apple store told me i could use it with windows 2000. not so!
anyway, if and when we do update our wares, it'll most likely be xp as vista seems to only cause computers to run slower with all those fancy dancing files and such. apart from that there's not much between them, i believe. |
