Three protesters are climbing up the suspension cables of the Golden Gate Bridge as part of an advance protest to the coming Olympic torch relay.

The protesters are wearing helmets and one of is carrying a suitcase with him. All three of the protesters are tethered together.

One of them has pulled out a Tibetan flag.

Authorities are pushing reporters back from the scene.

One northbound lane of the bridge is closed because of the protest, according to the California Highway Patrol.

I listened to the coverage on BBC radio over the weekend. I thought it sounded just appalling. What a ridiculous way for people to behave, and over the Olympics! The Chinese are a superpower in training. We need to pick the right battles. For once, I'm glad that the Chinese people probably can't see this lunacy because their media won't play it.

The summer Olympics have sucked ass since I was a little girl. We pulled out of the USSR's olympics and then they pulled out of ours and there hasn't been a good one since. The one where the USSR didn't come was the worst ever--all these Americans were pumping themselves up over winning everything but without the Soviet block countries there was no real competition. But we kicked ass that year, yes we did.

How funny is it that all the countries whose citizens are protesting the most over this have a history of colonial oppression?

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Olympic torch played hide and seek with thousands of demonstrators and spectators crowding the city's waterfront Wednesday before being spirited away without even a formal goodbye on its symbolic stop in the United States.

At least one torchbearer decided to show her support for Tibetan independence during her moment in the spotlight. After being passed the Olympic flame, Majora Carter pulled out a small Tibetan flag that she had hidden in her shirt sleeve.

i was being interviewed today at the chicago protest and found myself not agreeing witht he whole "boycott the olympics" getup.

i think all this spotlight on china is a great thing, and i would love to see athletes and representatives from all nations coming together supporting the tibetan cause. better yet, i hope this can be an opportunity for all nations to bring their suffering to the table and join together in solidarity for the universal struggle for human rights. this is what the olympics should be about. no longer competition, but a celebration of unity and humanity.

boycott the olympics- i say NO! use the olympics to bring nations and people together to help the tibetan cause. to help all people struggling against human rights abuse. hopefully this spotlight wont fade away.

all i see in the media is tibet protests here and there with lots of coverage but if you have an anti war march there is no coverage or if i go and protest against arms companys i see nothing, it looks as if the media is quiet happy for these anti china protests are seen it all looks a little suss, havent the cia been working with the dalai lama since the beginning? i dont like what china are doing but i cant stand the hipocrisy either

and it really shows how media is used.

it also seems that the media downplays the numbers of protestors at any event involving the iraq war, and bolsters them with the tibet cause.

there has been a media campaign ive noticed, towards china recently here in the US. it started with falsified reports of there being cardboard in egg rolls (lol), then progressed to the lead paint in childrens toys...now its the tibet issue that is "all of the sudden" front page news. it never really got the attention it is getting now- and probably for many reasons, not the least of which, the olympics.

and the CIA's role in the struggle for tibet is weak. i have heard the links, but they havent done shit to help the tibetans.

regardless, i am just happy people are becoming more aware about the tibet issue. i hope the media coverage continues, and more and more people put pressure on china to change their ways

any athlete who takes the tragedy in tibet, and the protests worldwide personally is a shame to the game. this should be an opportunity for all athletes, and people from all over the world to come together in solidarity for tibet, darfur and human rights everywhere.

china invaded tibet in 1949 (i think it was 49) and took over the country by genocide. since then its been nothing but brutal tragedy for tibets environment, culture, religion and people. millions have died imprisoned, in murderous wars, or flat out execution style for not giving up their buddhist beliefs and culture. many have been monks, dedicated to a life of nonviolence and compassion.
their cultural heritage is rich, spanning many hundreds of years past. they were highly regarded by many cultures, empires and dynasty's throughout history as being holders of high wisdom and spiritual enlightenment.

the majority of monastaries have been destroyed in tibet. hundreds of thousands have fled into neighboring india and nepal. many have been settled here in the US under resettlement programs. the tibetans protest for their own freedom, and the peaceful return of their spiritual leader, the dalai lama who now lives in exhile in india.

its more than a hangover from the cold war. its a country the size of western europe full of 6 million tibetans who suffer every day from the loss of their loved ones, oppression and imprisonment. you can be imprisoned for owning a picture of the dalai lama
