![]() Holy smokes! This one flew completely under my radar.
This is a good, good, good, good, good, good, good good good movie. ![]() Upstate New York. A woman and her two sons (five and fifteen) live in a trailer. The dad has split, probably off on a gambling spree. They've got a double-wide being delivered and she needs to come up with the balloon payment and she just doesn't have it. Works a crappy, low-paying job. The rent-to-own company is ready to come and grab the TV if she doesn't make that payment. Etc. She's got to come up with the money, and that's where things kick in. Don't spoil it for yourself knowing much more than this: the way things happen are surprising like real life; it's got a plot, but doesn't feel plotted like most movies do. The acting is fantastic. Talk about a struggling family. Holy crap. The way the older brother cares for his younger brother is really touching, and the way the teenager romanticizes his absent father and digs at his mom from time to time, resentfully reminding her of the situation she's all-too painfully aware of, is fantastic. This is a really naturalistic movie, so what You Can Count On Me was to comedy, Frozen River is to thriller. (Well... sort of a thriller. Almost noirish.) Anyway. This movie is a pretty big deal. If it plays near you, go see it, and I think you'll be pleased. 9/10.

![]() Oh, for a 10/10 movie I actually have this fireworks applet that goes off.
I look over at RottenTomatoes and this only has a 78%, which blows me away. Unless all you can grasp are Michael Bay movies, I can't imagine someone thinking this is a bad movie.

![]() ![]() Well, maybe I'm wrong, but I thought it was terrific. Looks like it';s been scooping up prizes on the indie circuit (Sundance Grand Jury Prize, "Women in Cinema Lena Sharpe Award" [whatever the fuck that means] at Seattle for the director, etc.). Maybe that's why people hate it. ![]()
