anyway, I hope there's some kind of investigation into what Materazzi said that made Zidane flip out. those mics on the side of the field are pretty powerful, perhaps they picked something up. if Nesta was playing something like that wouldn't have happened. he wouldn't have lowered himself to say something like "dirty terrorist".

ive heard a number of different theories bout what was said including, a racial slur, a comment about zidane's mother and most shockingly a comment about zidane's recently deceased first coach about which materazzi said "i hope he suffered before he died"
all of course are just hearsay, but it must have been something horrible to make zidane snap like that.

regardless of what materazzi said, zidane knows the game. players talk shit, that's part of the game. but being all out stupid and charging? that's just unsportsmanlike. zizou had a great game before that.
i dont think he shouldve gotten the golden ball though.
why? cause they don't run around in vests breaking eachothers ribs and studding eachother in the chest?

For the President to come out and gush over a stupid athlete like that the day after he humiliated himself, and France on a global level is hilarous.
Even George Bush has more dignity. France is a complete joke on so many levels, Congrats.

But If Zidane has been victim of a racial insult, it's serious.

Won't be happening. And Zidane quit anyways. Cufre from Argentina was banned for only 4 games for kicking Mertesacker square in the nuts. FIFA knows no justice. They only fucked up Cantona's career, since then you can do what you want...

10 things materazzi might have said:
1. i've got a piece of steak stuck in my windpipe - could you help me get it out?
2. your wife likes it when i do this.
3. you can't win, zinedine. if you strike me down i shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.
4. camus' absurdist duality is merely an extension of misguided western philosophical traditions, and therefore no more helpful in understanding life and death than the ideas that predated it.
5. i saw your mum round the back of the olympiastadion.
6. oi, slaphead, let me do that thing benny hill used to do to the little old fella.
7. in italy, when someone tweaks your nipple, it is the secret signal to start throwing the match.
8. i am very interested in the late cretacious period - could you show me how the homalocephale defended itself from enemies?
9. luis figo told me your middle name is yaz.
10. eh, la, i played for everton - who did you ever play for? do one, mate.

This was stupid. It broke my heart to see him go off of the pitch like that in his final game.
Plus you can't use the pressure card because it's not the first time that he did shit like this. He headbutted a guy in the champions league when he was still with juve which cost him the player of the year award and he kicked that saudi player in 98 which cost him a two game ban. He just snaps.
He's a man alright. A foul tempered man.
He has tainted his career with this and there is no way you can blame this on Materazzi. Zidane shouldn't have reacted. Period.
Broke your heart? Really?
He's done all those things you've mentioned and is still considered a great. It's done. Zidanes career I mean, and it was one everyone would have rather seen in football than not. So what, he went out the way he did... it happens in football, ALL THE TIME.
And I don't think anyone is blaming this on Materazzi, people can make their own decisions and Zidane made his. People are just more interested in why he did it, not trying to excuse him.
synch
07-11-2006, 05:46 AM
It did, it would have been the equivalent of one of my all time favourite players Zola spitting an opponent in the face and getting sent off in his final competitive game. It taints the career of one of the best players of our generation.
People are putting the blame on Materazzi and trying to excuse the inexcusable.
"Yes, he did try to break his ribs BUT THAT MEANIE MUST HAVE SAID SOMETHING TO PROVOKE HIM!"
Well duh, that's the name of the game, try to put your opponents off of their game. I don't condone it but that's how it works. If a veteran like that doesn't know it then how can you expect a guy like Rooney ever to get his act together?
Otis Driftwood
07-11-2006, 06:23 AM
Heck, I don't. People make mistakes. And I like the emotion in the game. Cantona, Gullit, Totti, Basler, Gazza. I love 'em cause they're human, not a corporate sponsored tool like Kaka. Maybe Rooney will join this league of extraordinary Non-Gentlemen.

14 red cards in his career according to a french guy on another forum.
What I remember: Headbutted someone in the champions league thus killing his chances for the player of the year award (which he was a dead certain to get that year), stepped on a saudi player's thigh giving him a two match ban in the 98 world cup.

Rooney has his act together. If you're refering to his last sending off then don't even get me started!

Indeed. My point is that despite all of that he's still considered a great. The latest sending off isn't going to affect that. Players lose their cool all the time, as you say it's part of the game with so and so trying to wind so and so up. It happens.
I mean look at the example of when Zidane stamped on that player in the world cup, by the end of it how was he seen? A legend! 2 goals in the final...he's walked away from this world cup with just about everyone still seeing him as someone who graced the game, and that won't change. I'm sure that 'missed' player of year award doesn't keep him awake at night.

With Zidane on the pitch for the remainder of the game... who knows... they might have scored a goal, a freekick or won the penalty shoot out.
I understand what you mean about some players needing to be a bit of a loose cannon in order to be the great player that they are but in this particular case he let his team down.

MILAN, Italy (AP) -- Marco Materazzi admits he insulted Zinedine Zidane before the France captain head-butted him in the World Cup final. Materazzi denies calling him a "terrorist."
"I did insult him, it's true," Materazzi said in Tuesday's Gazzetta dello Sport. "But I categorically did not call him a terrorist. I'm not cultured and I don't even know what an Islamic terrorist is."

Yep, fair enough.
I would say Rooney is one of those players by the way. Although, without sparking off a debate, I didn't see much in his red card and I think temperment wise he's improved somewhat...but that's another issue.
I'm glad you're so passionate about Zidane, there aren't many players that something like what happened would result in my heart breaking, but I know what you mean...I can think of a few.

He's an icon, one of those players you can't help but admire. Unfortunatly he has his dark sides but hey, so did Maradona.
The only player that has none whatsoever and is in my opinion one of the true greats (and greatly underrated even though so many adore him) is...
Gianfranco Zola!
True gentleman, fantastic player.
Oh and about Rooney, he shoved a player right in front of the ref, the ref couldn't have not sent him off. He didn't get sent off for the testicle stomp although if the ref had seen it...
I'm not saying it was intentional by the way but even if you elbow a player unintentionally it's still a red card.

Now the great mystery is what set Zissou off. What could Materazzi have possibly said to send him over the edge? Answers are beginning to filter out. According to a FIFA employee transcribing what was said during the match, Materazzi's called Zissou a "big Algerian shit." A Brazilian television program that claims to have used a lip-reader said Materazzi called Zissou's sister "a whore." The highly respected French anti-racist coalition SOS Racisme issued a press release stating, "According to several very well informed sources from the world of football, it would seem [Materazzi] called Zissou a 'dirty terrorist'."

Yeah I'm with you on Zola. I always admired Ryan Giggs for being such a clean player and generally nice guy with so much talent. Players like him deserved to be at world cups...oh well.
You see I thought that (about Rooney) but the ref came out and said Ronaldo had no impact on his decision...so I'd say that means it was for the 'stamp', as the ref apparently had his mind made up before Ronaldo's intervention, and hence also the push.

Couldn't that just mean that it wasn't Ronaldo's asking for the card that influenced the sending off? Meaning that it was the fact that Rooney shoved Ronaldo but not the fact that Ronaldo talked to get him sent off?
You can clearly see on the images how he doesn't take Rooney aside until after the shove.
