Default 2008 Resolutions Thread!

Same idea from last year. Did you accomplish your resolution from last year?

What's your new one for this year?

I moved the hell outta Maryland, so I was successful. I don't really have any specific resolutions for this year, other than to try to lose some weight before May. I always gain in the winter and then have to try to lose in the spring.

I was just thinking about this earlier when writing out my christmas cards. We have a lot of friends we almost never see as they don't live in london anymore, and most all of us have a rugrat or two, so it just seems like we never find time to get together. So I decided that my resolution this year would be to get out of London more often and go visit with friends, maybe like one weekend a month or something.

I am definitely more organized, not perfect at it yet, but a vast improvement.

And I am going to be moving out of town before the month is over. So I got those covered

As far as 2008 is concerned; I just resolve to be as positive as possible and hope for the best while living in a new town.

hahaha
i read over the 2007 thread and i had the exact same rant so i decided to edit.

if you have a goal, why wouldn't you begin it RIGHT NOW. why say "oh i have this awesome idea/improvement/goal but i won't start it until january 1"

time is nothing but a construct, years don't actually MEAN anything. new years eve doesn't mean anything besides the dates clicking over which is kinda cool, but today is a day just as tomorrow is a day, just as january 1, 2008 will be just a day.

of course time is a construct but it's something on which we all operate and i'd be willing to argue that humankind NEEDS milestones and markers, and the changing of the seasons and a cycle around the sun is as good as any hmm? years definitely mean something in that sense. humans need rhythms.

besides, i don't plan to work in a hospital at this very moment but i know it's something i want to start doing sometime later on in the next year or so. so that's that. and pancakes, well, that will come. i hope. god, i hope.

what load of shit, people can't bear to quit smoking or whatever it is they want to do so they promise that they will do it on new years and they never do and then they "resolve" to do it again the next year.

if you have resolved something in your head you should start now, not on new years, you might have changed your mind by then.

since yours is a goal to work in a hospital sometime next year - i'd have to say that is simply a goal, and not a new years resolution. since you've already decided to do it, it is a goal you have NOW, a CURRENT goal, not a new year's resolution.

I don't agree. Life gets a bit hectic around the holidays - there are social events, family obligations, things at work get all screwy because people are taking holiday time and there's less work time anyway because of the end-of-December time off so for many there's a greater sense of urgency about reaching deadlines, or for students, there are exams... I feel like, it's totally fine to let that whole swirling mass spin itself out like a storm, and approach your goals fresh from the start of the New Year, because January and February are long, cold, dark months where not much happens - it's the perfect time to focus inwards and assess your own priorities.

And if you change your mind on 5 Jan about something you had set as a resolution, then so what? It's your life, you're allowed to say "actually maybe this isn't as important to me as I first thought."

Personally I don't set a laundry list of resolutions, I just try to identify maybe one or two things that I think would improve the quality of my life and see how I can go about making that happen. If it's something that's practical to start straight away then I will (as I have done this year, a few weeks ago), but if I just go "aaaaaargh, can't be doing with that just right now" then it can wait.

so what's the point in making a New Year's Resolution then?

Sure, why not? You seem to feel that in order for the process to be meaningful, it has to be decisive and unchanging, and that it's about a timeframe and an outcome. I don't see it that way - for me, the value is in the process. Setting the goals, identifying the behaviours that would lead to the desired outcome, and assessing along the way to see how it's going, if there needs to be any modification.

You are of course correct in saying that the 'starting line' need not be 1 Jan; it is only one possibility but it isn't an entirely arbitrary choice either, certainly not for those of us in the grip of winter when it comes along. Hey if it doesn't suit you, then, you know, that's cool, you do what you like; I know people who make their New Year's resolutions to coincide with their birthdays, which certainly makes sense as well as far as markers and milestones go. But just because the concept of a 1 Jan resolution doesn't work for you personally, doesn't mean it's not a valid choice for others.

last year my resolution was more of a declaration. we declared it "Year of the Show" and swore to see as many bands as we could. i think it worked out pretty well.

this year my resolution is to lower my expectations of others. i get so spazzed out about things. i usually get my feelings hurt if my good friends don't get just as excited or show interest in things i find interesting. i need to learn not to let others effect my excitement for something.

okok so i need to get a decent paying job, with benefits. something i can live off.
and my own place soon. it's hard not having my own room and my own space to do things, and sleeping on a couch.
and yeah, get stuff. i left all my stuff behind and i hardly have any possessions at all.
and meet people and make friends. that's pretty important.
