thats what I thought too, but then I went to dictionary.com and VFW was listed in the acronym finder. So I figured the term acronym covered abbreviations too. who knows...

My friend, Jon, who I had drinks with a couple weeks back, is always on the Internets, yet had no clue what STFU meant after I had said it out loud.

He was like, "What's STFU mean?"

I was thinking, "DYG!" (Damn You're Gay)

Now he's all about the STFU.

I have yet to tell him about the DYG. I'd hate to confuse him any further.

I think acronym is the right word, abbreviations are where you shorten a word by dropping some letters like assistant becomes asst.
