Default Goths

When i was in high school, "emo" didn't even really exist. It was only goth kids. Yeah i hung out with them. Some of them. I was one of those kids that made sure that i looked different to everyone else and acted all badass, and put shitty colour in my hair and wore doc martens and tartan skirts and fishnets. Fuck man, i still dye my hair black, have that same belt and have my lip pierced. I don't think i ever grew out of it properly.
The goths i knew weren't all depressed or anything at all, they just wore all black. Most of them seemed to really enjoy life.
Anyway, i don't see any goth kids anymore. What happened to goths?
Share your goth stories. Or even share your stories about your high school rebellion.

there were never any goths here. and there's very little of emmo kids. i think they all congregate at the mall. that's the only place i ever see them.

my hair's been pretty much every color except maybe orange or yellow. i sewed a lot of my own clothes. i shaved my head in junior year with a 3 guard and sort of stopped going to school for a while. i had a lip ring too but outgrew it. i really wasn't all that rebellious - i had at least a 4.0 most of the time, i guess i just went through a rough time toward the end of high school.

senior year, i got voted most unique, which says a lot about my school.

oh ha - i quasi-dated a bisexual goth guy (he was a senior, i was a freshman) who later turned out to be just plain gay. he was probably the worst kisser i've ever had. he was a drama queen and a half.

All the people i was friends with didn't grow out of it, and they're all heroin addicts now. But they don't consider that a bad thing. To them heroin addiction = artistic and free.

i don't understand how someone can purposely associate themselves with such a maligned group of people. i think the average person takes KKK memebers more seriously than that emmo/goth shit.

it's like you're going out of your way to tell everyone to hate you. why? why would you do that?

nah, it's more like going out of your way to make sure that everyone knows that you're different. it's taking not fitting in to an extreme.

so being a bit of a weirdo is not enough? you need to make yourself even weirder? that does nothing but take a person that would have had respect for you and take it all away making you even more of an outcast. you're saying these people want to be outcasts?

i suppose it's feeling like you belong in a certain group, rather than just being a non-affiliated weirdo.

i just don't have a whole lot of respect for people that put a lot of premeditated thought and physical effort into "being themselves" for all types of people. and most other people feel the same way. you're not really being yourself when you're putting that much effort and premeditated thought into your persona.

all you're doing is making people loose a lot of respect for you. that's the only thing being accomplish.

this isn't just about goths but all people that go out of there way to be different. just be yourself. being yourself shouldn't take any effort.

The thing that annoys me most about these fringe groups is that they seem to find it offensive that I want to live "normally". I don't have a gimmik, whatever.

I don't have anything against them, so why is it that they don't like me? Not that I particularly care, but it does make me curious.

the cure aren't as popular as they used to be, but going to the cure concert really brought all those goths out of retirement.

Goths are the same as any other "group". Except they try harder to be noticed.

i never considered myself goth, or anything really. i sometimes wonder why i dyed my hair and dressed the way i did and stuff considering the fact that i was so damned shy back then. i guess it was just self-expression or whatever. i still dye my hair and dress like i do, but lately i'm starting to feel like it's time to move on and start getting some shirts with collars and buttons and shit. i always feel silly when i'm trying on professional-ish clothes, though...like a little kid playing dress-up in mommy's closet. i definitely stick out in my major, where everyone else looks like they're either fresh from the gym or going to a corporate meeting. and here i am, ms. blue hair and 7-year-old cons and hokey thrift store shirt like i'm in some 90s grrrl band or something. i guess it's time to grow up...

I could never really get into Joy Division.

The whole goth scene kind of turned my stomach. I don't think it's healthy to celebrate or fetishize or fashion-ize most of what goth seemed
to be about.

Has anyone in this family ever even seen a chicken?

All the goths I knew were morphine addicts. Ridiculous, though. They dress like that as if they were never just a plain old kid once upon a time. Oh well. As long as they're miserable.

oh oh! i saw a bunch of goths last night! of course it was halloween, but i went to this costume party at a club and they were spinning all this gothy music and they were getting down with their gothy dances. it was all so... gothy. it was neat b/c i hadn't seen them around in awhile, then i realized it was b/c they're all 30 now and halloween is an excuse to go back to it for a day.

i do have to say i love me some depeche modeish, goth inspired, hating life, loving misery, dark dance music. gets me all saucy.

I like the '80s goth music a lot (i.e. The Cure, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie & The Banshees et al.), but goths themselves are kinda annoying. I went to see The Raveonettes last week (they're not a goth band, but the venue they played attracts lots of goths) and saw this fat goth girl. She was the stereotypical goth, looking paler than a vampire. I turned to my friend and asked: "Why is it that goth girls are alway FAT?" She laughed really hard and couldn't believe I actually said that, but ended up agreeing.

Sedentary lifestyle combined with clinical depression (or perceived depression). Antidepressants can cause weight gain.

I can't really imagine a hardcore goth getting up early and going out for a jog.

I saw a fit goth in exercise clothing! he got a coffee at starbucks! it's true!

I went to a show with shoegaze sort of music and mostly all of the girls were fat. I think that's just the way it goes.
