The saving grace is that the best team in the tournament is rarely the one that wins it. France in 98 were awful until the final, both Italy and Brazil were poor for most of 94 but ended up in the final, Germany in 02 were a terrible side and ended up in the final, and both Germany and Argentina in 1990 weren't great.

If we get a lot of luck and steer clear of any more injuries then we can do ok, but so far I've not seen anything from England to suggest we'll be able to break down a well managed defence, and yet again we look poor defending set pieces.

The thing about Chelsea is that in Cole, Robben and Duff they have three excellent international wingers, and only two wings to put them on, so they do have to switch and swap a fair bit to keep everyone sharp and happy.

To be honest I think we created a lot and we could have easily been a goal or two up after 45 minutes. Toni alone had 4-5 good chances.

After Materazzi (that utter utter utter utter utter cunt) got sent off we became the defensive side of yesteryear but all in all I don't think it's undeserved. I disagree about Italy not being good enough for the quarter finals. Then again, I'm Italian so I would think that.

But seriously, we topped our group, didn't play the best football but we hardly ever do. By topping our group we earned the right to play the number two from a group containing Australia and Brazil. Switzerland and Ukraine earned their right to be in the world cup and they qualified for the next round. It's all very convenient for Italy, no doubt about it, but it's not our fault that we didn't get a draw that involved consecutively playing brazil, argentina and germany.

Italy is a team that historically starts out shit and goes through not by playing brilliantly but by controlling the game, letting the opponent have jabs at us and striking back. It's hardly ever pleasant to watch and believe me, I suffer greatly when I watch Italy play.

Yesterday we created many chances and when it was 11 vs 11 had the better of the game.

The penalty was soft, but hey.

Australia got robbed again. We got robbed of a win against croatia because of attrocious umpiring. Now we've been robbed of at least a draw against italy. Italy can argue all they like that they looked like scoring more often than us, and that Materazzi shouldnt have been sent off. But the fact remains, they just couldnt get past Lucas Neill all match, and we had heaps more possession and we were missing by far our best player to injury, and our second best player to a dodgy card decision. With Kewell at least in there and a decent referee, we would've won. And we would've got through to the semis. I feel sorry for Guus a little, 2 semi finals in a row with Korea and Australia would've been a huge achievement.

I'd like to share my sympathy with my fellow Australians. I'm still feeling down about the whole thing... really down, which is unexpected. I mean, the odds weren't in our favour, and I could have dealt with a loss, but not like that, that was just unfair. No one deserves to lose like that and I wouldn't wish it upon any team.
