![]() Have been horrible tippers, or not tipped at all.
Last night my friend had a family of 5 and their bill got to $130 - they didn't leave her any tip at all. Oh and also they came in at 10, which is when we close (we have to serve people that come in right up untill closing) Why is this? Anyone have any insight? Should I now be discriminatory because of this? If it had only happened once or twice i wouldn't think anything of it - but I've definetly notice a trend. Cosmo? |

sure they should. Perhaps its not customary for them to tip. Just because its an american expectation doesnt mean that EVERYONE should just know off the bat to tip. If its an issue, mention it to your management and push for just a mandatory gratuity to be included in the check.

![]() I've traveled around the world via the US Navy and I've been to several countries. I've also traveled as a youngster to different countries and whether it was with the Navy or as a Civilian, I always respected the rules, customs and traditions of the country I was visiting. I don't think it matters where a person is from, if you are in Rome, do as the Romans do.

not sure why you've had this experience. I'm kind of a watered down mexican though, and I worked as a server so I tip pretty well, at least 30% if not more usually. |

![]() Yeah, try working anywhere expert for the US then you'll see most places don't demand a tip.
I work on a bar at nights and make about £5 tips, max. Having breasts will get your more tips though.

![]() in australia tipping is not the custom at all really. i think ive only tipped once at a restaurant, because our waiter was fantastic. we dont tip in taxis, altho i always round up to the 5 or 0, like if it was 28 bucks id give em 30. unless they are rude, then i wait to get my 5c change. no one expects to get a tip, even in hotels. when i worked in a 5 star bar in a hotel i was always happy to serve americans cuz they tipped. one pro golfer who was on tour even left his tab open for me to have a couple of drinks after i knocked off. the bodyguard for pearl jam tipped me $20 every drink he bought, and he bought alot of drinks that night!
also, i've always wanted to ask this, in the US on tv shows whenever theres a scene in a diner when the actors get up and leave they just leave the cash on the table, is that really how it goes? cos that doesnt happen here. u always go up to the till and pay there. if u just got up and left A: they would think you are trying to leave without paying or B: someone else would take the cash off the table. |

![]() Years ago, I had a conversation with a friend about this. Well actually we were talking about why generally black people will tip less than white people. (Broad sweeping generalisation of course, but more often than not true.) Her theory was that in our generation (meaning for the purposes of this discussion, people who are now between 25-45), most white young white people grew up in middle class, white collar families where you went out to eat at a proper restaurant at least once in a while from the time you were quite young on, so you got to see a bit more what was "the done thing" and learned by experience, even if you didn't realise it at the time. However, most young black people grew up in working class, blue collar families and may well be amongst the first in their families to have gone to college, and to have the kind of jobs that allow them to have the level of 'disposable income' that makes it possible to dine out more frequently, and didn't grow up seeing their elders handle checks and work out tips etc. So essentially her projection is that as minorities become more assimilated into mainstream American middle class culture, this kind of thing begins to even itself out as successive generations become more aware of what is considered "appropriate" and fall in accordingly.
This conversation happened years ago, when we were waitresses and it was after a shift where she had had a table of four young black women - office admin assistants, who were clearly reasonably educated and somewhat professional - who were there celebrating one of thier birthdays. They racked up a tab of over $150, and had tipped the waitress $5. (She was a black woman herself btw, so it wasn't 'a black/white thing'.) |

![]() I tip when the service is good - usually 10-15%. If it's not, then I won't bother too much. As for taxi's, I'll usually round it up like mikizee said. I do leave the money on the table if I am paying cash though. The waitress/waiter will usually be pretty on the ball about picking it up quickly and I certainly have never worried that some scummer is going to steal it off a table.
