I didn't say the monkey thing was racist. I'm just saying I can see how people would take it as such. especially considering that other comic I put up, which is very clearly racist.

I'm actually more offended by the mocking of the chimp thing. it's a really sad story that has nothing to do with politics, and I don't get the connection or think it's even remotely clever...or even a joke for that matter.

Wednesday's Page Six cartoon - caricaturing Monday's police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut - has created considerable controversy.

It shows two police officers standing over the chimp's body: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill," one officer says.

It was meant to mock an ineptly written federal stimulus bill.

Period.

But it has been taken as something else - as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism.

This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.

However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past - and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback.

To them, no apology is due.

Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon - even as the opportunists seek to make it something else.

to answer your question, sazi, no I'm not sure. I'm an average reader with an interpretation of the cartoon. it's the NY Post.

If the monkey had the word "Congress" written over him in true political cartoon fashion, or if the artist never used the word "stimulus bill" this would never have been an issue.

but the mere fact that president Obama is tied to the story, it's a veiled racist attack on the president.

Actually Dorothy is right. Picture the cartoon and caption exactly the same, except with straw hats instead of turbans, watermelons instead of rifles, and gleeful black guys with huge lips instead of gleeful Arab guys with huge noses. That shit would never fly, and rightly so, because such unsightly and prejudiced caricatures are supposed to be a thing of the past when it comes to even moderately intelligent political discourse.

It seems however that this cartoonist has missed that particular boat - even if he never intended to associate Barack Obama with a monkey, surely if he had any brains it might have occurred to him that a metaphor involving a monkey is going to be perceived differently under an African-American than under Bush. But brains don't seem to be a real strong point for this clumsy, hamfisted hack anyway. Just another example of why the right was so soundly rejected by the American voter in the last two election cycles.
