I saw Perfume the other night. It was oddly interesting. I have been a renter and moviegoer lately. I have seen the Simpsons movie and the Bourne Ultimatum at the theater this week.

I have rented Hot Fuzz, 300, Perfume, The Host and tonight I watched Disturbia. I liked Disturbia but when the confrontation occurred it got a bit corny. It was almost like the director thought-- I need to speed it up NOW and end it. I kept hearing that it was the modern day Rear Window. It is a pathetic comparison. I did enjoy the film and Shia was very good.....but Alfred Hitchcock, Grace Kelly and Jimmy Stewart....come on...pfft.

just got back from seeing babel, what a lot of bull (n)(n)

a young boy wanking, close up japanese pussy on BIG SCREEN, chicken murdering, children shooting at cars, police shooting at children..

the pussy part was good but also unbelievable embarassing cause my mum was sitting right next to me

i could only see the middle part of the subtitles cause the heads of other people were in the way and i didnt see the end cause the movie was getting too silly and i needed to pee pretty badly anyway

i would be pretty pissed now if i had to pay for it though i still want my money back!

It was OK. It had its moments but overall it wasn't anything to write home about. If you're a SB fan (SB fans should definitely give it a shot) or want to watch Sienna Miller for a little while, you might just want to wait til it comes out on DVD.

I didn't realize that Adrienne Shelly played Dawn!! That's crazy. That was so sad...I remember everyone talking about that at Sundance last year.

I loved that film. It was really well-written. The only part I didn't feel was cast right was the husband, Jeremy Sisto. He just didn't seem right for it.

I'm guessing you meant Andy Griffith, not Richter, lolz...he was awesome too.

Anyway to answer the question for this thread I just watched the Godfather Part II last night for the first time (just saw the first one a few days ago). Good shit, of course!! It's so mind-blowing how much it must have cost. We had to take breaks because it was so intense.

Watched Zodiac the other night. Mark Ruffalo was incredible, outshone the whole cast. Including Jake, who is one of my favorites.

Why oh why does he not focus on this kind of thing instead of shit like 13 going on 30 or Just Like Heaven.

Finally saw Inland Empire (http://imdb.com/title/tt0460829/), Laura Dern great actress. If you never saw a movie by David Lynch you'd probably either get bored as hell and turn it off.. As expected it was hard to follow but I continued to watch it even as I was so tired to watch it... If you thought Mullholland Dr. was weird this gets weirder, quite long there's several characters in the movie but the movie was all Laura Dern.....I give it 6 1/2 stars. I think I enjoyed Mullholland Dr. more though...this isn't a movie you can watch over and over but it's not to say it's bad, I mean it is quite long and the story seemed to move slow. I liked end credits, cool music and some appearances by a couple actresses in his past movies and or friends.

I went to see the Halloween matinee on Friday. Rob Zombie turned it into a slasherfest. He incorporated lots of t&a for a R movie and dropped in music that really had me rolling. For instance--Tom Sawyer by Rush when Michael Myers was on a rampage. The movie was not great or even good for the matter but I have to say I was a bit entertained.

I just read that Rob Zombie's Halloween had the best Labor Day gross in history.

Yeah I read that yesterday I was looking at trailers. Ugh, I hate remakes. Generally they're never good with a few exceptions. But after seeing trailers I'm somewhat curious to see it plus haven't watched a scary movie and seems like I'm in the mood. Enjoyed reading what you thought of it.

If you go to see Halloween just go in knowing that it is on a lark. It might be enjoyable. Rob Zombie decided to show how Michael Myers killed most of his family and his days in the sanitarium. When Myers gets out of the sanitarium it goes right into the original Halloween. It is almost like 2 mini-movies. Zombie wrote the script and the dialogue is very awkward. He does not hold back on the blood and when I think about it I jumped up in my seat twice the entire film. You know what I mean when I say jumped up in my seat? (the I did not expect it moment)

The Lady from Shanghai with Orson Wells, the final in the Madhouse of Mirrors is amazing!

Did you like the whole movie?

I never quite got into it altogether, but, yeah -- that ending was great. Woody ripped it off later for Bullets over Broadway or something like that.

Once again, Orson got butchered by the studio stuff, though. There are stills you can find in occasional Welles books (Naremore's, and also the one with Bogdonovich) where you see where else he went with the funhouse sequence.

At first it was a bit hard to understand Wells' dialogue. I liked the scene in front of the parking garage, and that actor who played Quisby (he who payed Wells the 5K to have him "kill" him) striked me as a true lunatic. The shark metaphor was good and ominous! Of course, the double crossing is standard fare for films of this period. Next on my list is Crossfire, from the same year. :D

Yeah -- Welles' screwy... he did an Irish or Scottish accent in that? Irish?

Man, it's been a while since I've seen it.

The studio cut about an hour off that movie. Wonder what it would've been like in full. Maybe just a longer messy.

Some of the process shots looked kinda cheesy, if I remember right.

The caribean picnic at night? Indeed! Guess Wells was talking a bit Irishish, as his character was called "Black Irish", though it didn't sound like Cassidy the Vampire. And you're right, one hour woulda been a lot of excess baggage. Maybe the cuts resulted in the monologue in which Wells retells his misfortune, it's a nice framing device. You should rewatch it just for that mad lawyer Quisby, though. He's scared of the atom bomb.

I will be sure to report back. I saw The Proposition and I thought it was very good. The ad campaign says it is the best western since The Unforgiven. I love Clint Eastwood but I thought The Unforgiven was way overrated. A hooker that was cut on her face managed to spur the assassin out of retirement. Sheesh?!
Gene Hackman was good as Little Bill and of course Clint was great as usual.
I have my fingers crossed that 3:10 to Yuma is better.

I just watched The Falling Man. The plight of people on that day having to choose their own method of death is one of the few things in this life that has resonated any empathetic reaction from me. Explain? I know nothing about this.

It's the story of 9/11 jumpers. I became worried I had developed a morbid fascination with that day, but I'm beginning to see I'm actually quite affected by the humanity of it all. That's my lot to bear, I guess.

So the film-maker seeks to identify one man pictured serenely falling to his death. The photo originally ran 9/12, and caused quite a stir. It was "Voyeuristic" and "showed no respect to the dead". The photographer combated the claims (and I get his drift when he says it) by stating he wasn't lauding anybody's death, but capturing a moment of their life; where they had made an impossible decision.

Are you at work (and what the fuck is it you do anyway, Mr. Movies? :D)? I ask because somebody with a director's account has ripped it to youtube.

Yeah, see, to me, that's the one movie of his where everything totally came together. I'm not that nuts about his performance, the more often I see it, but everything else, to me, is pretty much perfect. Maybe not the young gun with shaky eyes, but that movie, to me, is about a 9/10. (y)

We had to leave because we were laughing hard, out loud, disturbing the other folks in the place.

I don't understand why people hate Babel so much. I thought it was alright. thought-provoking even. the mexican wedding stuff reminded me of my childhood.

yeah it was pretty good. nowhere near the departed, but it was still enjoyable.

russell crowe was also outstanding in gladiator - i can't believe no one mentioned it yet. and l.a. confidential was dope.

downfall was insane. it's about life from the perspective of one of hitler's naive, yet innocent secretaries, during the final ten days of the third reich. being in that situation would have been horrible; living in a cavernous bunker and knowing that the end is near, while all-out urban warfare and carnage was just above. while you sympathize with the secretary, who ultimately escapes with a young berlin boy to the western allies' front, your hatred of the nazis is also further solidified. the actor who played hitler was mindblowing - everything was spot on.

the last king of scotland was great, i loved it. forrest whitaker gave a monstrous performance as the ruthless and brutal idi amin. for a while there i thought the ending was going to be disastrous for the doctor, but then it all works out.

bobby was really engrossing. i loved all of the different characters, and their various relationships and story arcs, particularly the underlying racial tension between blacks and hispanics, and just how the staff were so committed to the ambassador hotel. the ensemble cast was magnificent too: anthony hopkins, harry belafonte, martin sheen, emilio estevez, demi moore, helen hunt, william h. macy, sharon stone, laurence fishburne, christian slater, elijah wood, heather graham, lindsay lohan, ashton kutcher, freddy rodriguez, josh jackson, and shia labeouf (the annoying kid from transformers, who essentially plays the same character in this movie). i'm not a fan of kutcher or lohan, but lohan was alright in her role (i definitely view her now in a better light), whereas kutcher just played a hippie drug dealer and had a very minor role, in which he didn't really do anything spectacular.

ghost rider was garbage, avoid it at all costs. i can't believe i actually watched it. surprisingly though nicholas cage doesn't overact in it.

breach was a very decent espionage drama, based on the true story of richard hanssen, an fbi agent who spied for the soviet union for fifteen years. it was probably one of chris cooper's best performances, i was blown away with his portrayal of hanssen. he should have been nominated for an oscar.

renaissance was a really good french action thriller, despite the animation, which i'm not a particular fan of.

for the majority of premonition, i was really suprised, however the conclusion was too predictable and cliche, which didn't really surprise me as it was a sandra bullock movie.

hollywoodland was amazing. this is ben affleck's comeback film - he was shockingly really good in this movie as george reeves, he proved that he's actually got acting chops. reeves was an aspiring american actor whose career looked promising after landing a role in the classic gone with the wind. he would go on to become superman in the 1950s saturday morning television show. apparently reeves began to make enquiries into the financial dealings of, and the substandard royalties he was receiving from mgm studios, while he was having an affair with actress toni mannix (played by diane lane, who is also really good), wife of mgm studio executive eddie mannix. mannix apparently had all sorts of organized crime connections, and was rumoured to have killed his first wife in 1937, was involved in the cover-up of the death of movie producer paul bern, and was also accused of participating in the brutal beating death of comedian ted healy. the film revolves around a private investigator, louis simo (played by adrian brody, who was awesome), who is hired by reeve's mother to investigate her son's death. the official version and police finding was that reeves committed suicide, however his mother and others refused to believe this, as reeves was not the suicidal type. simo quickly discovers that the police invesigation was sloppy and botched, and that an apparent cover-up was well in the works. simo's investigation eventually leads to both the mannixs, and particularly eddie mannix's shady background, dealings, and reputation. mannix was, and is portrayed in the film (bob hoskins really makes the character intimidating and creepy) as a genuine allen klein type: cold and ruthless, with money and profiteering as his main motivation in life. i highly recommend this film, entertaining as hell.

shooter started off so-so but then descended into absolute crap. it reminded me of a really bad 80s shoot 'em up b-movie.

fracture was pretty meh or average. really generic thriller or court room flick. hopkins was great, whereas all ryan gosling did was mumble and sound really dopey.

Personally I think Babel was really good....Especially if you look it as the 3rd film in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s trilogy…..starting with ‘Amores Perros” then “21 Grams”and concluding with ”Babel”…..all using similar intertwining plots and great, gritty cinematography, fine films all of them, way above standard fare…..(y)

Babel was average. the plots barely intertwined and although they perhaps had some thematic connection, the links were rather tenuous, and in my mind resulted in the feeling that I was just watching 3 separate films. there were some good scenes but overall it was a bit of a mess.

Has anyone seen Beyond The Gates?
It got over 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. It think I will rent it this afternoon.

Here is a synopsis---
Joe Connor has come to teach in Rwanda because he believes he can make a difference. When the school becomes a haven for thousands of Rwandans fleeing the genocide, Joe promises his brightest pupil, Marie, that the UN soldiers will protect her from the hordes of extremist militia baying for blood outside the school. But when the UN abandon the refugees, Joe and the school's headmaster, Father Christopher, face an agonising dilemma: should they leave or should they stand firm with the Rwandans. As the UN trucks force their way through the terrified refugees, Joe stares at the tear-stained face of Marie: what should he do?
What would you do?
Based on real events and filmed at the actual location where this story took place, Beyond the Gates is directed by Michael Caton-Jones and stars John Hurt and Hugh Dancy. It is an emotionally gripping, authentic and powerful recreation of a tragic real life story that took place during the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

Ughhhhhh......I just posted a lengthy reply only to get disconnected ... here's a very short version...random order. I kinda had a mini Asian movie festival ... Ratings are out of 10 stars.

1. Confession of Pain. (Tony Leung, loved him in Chunking Express and the Infernal Affairs movie. I was hoping for a little more but overall a good movie. This will also be remade for a Hollywood version again starring Leo DiCraprio I think.) 7 1/2 stars

2. Death Note 1 & 2. (Tatusya Fujiwara of Battle Royale is one of the key characters in the movie...coincidently I wanted to see this..) I enjoyed this. They're making or in the process of a separate movie based on a key character in the movie.... 8 1/2 stars

3. Abnormal Beauty. I thought it'd be better it's ok. I think I liked the music more (nothing spectacular but compared to the movie in general) that was added to heighten the drama or effect of the movie, lol. The ending to me was just ehhh.. 6 stars

4. A Tale of Two Sisters. Well acted by the leading character..a pretty good movie. 8 stars

5. I'm a Cyborg, But That's Ok. Again coincidently I wanted to see this because of the movie poster. This also stars the same actress as the actress in A Tale of Two Sisters. The opposite male lead for a first time actor who's better known as a popstar did good job I thought. I liked it. 8 stars

I feel like I'm forgetting a movie....hmmm

More Asian movies on queue but not quite sure which I'll watch first.... that's it for now. Until then popcorn for everyone!

Last night I watched Beyond the Gates starring John Hurt. It is an excellent film but the subject matter is very disturbing. All the films about the Rawandan genocide make my jaw drop.

John Hurt's character is a Catholic priest named Father Christopher that runs a school. The French UN soldiers are based at the school. When the President is assassinated thousands of people in the Tutsi tribe show up for protection. The Hutsi (spelling?) tribe shows up with machetes and machine guns outside the gates waiting for their chance for a mass slaughter.

Hugh Dancy is excellent as the school teacher and Clare-Hope Ashitey was very good as the student.

I give the film a solid A but make sure you are in the mood for the depressing subject matter.

Anyway, it was a good movie. I had too much wine to catch on to all of the little signals and subtle clues as to what was going on.

I felt extremely bad for Angelina Jolie's character and thought she gave a great performance.

What should I watch tonight? I'm not having a good day. I fought with my bf last night and I feel like wallowing in self-pity.
