I was sick all week so I watched ALOT

"miss pettigrew lives for a day"

Im was torn between hating and being fixated by amy adam's character. fannie Mcdormand <4.

"88 minutes"

ridiculously bad. the only fun part was picking out all the vancouver locations that they filmed at. my friend works in the research building on the UBC campus that the classroom scene was filmed in.

"the foot fist way"

ehhhhhhhhhh...

"then she found me"

helen hunt is aging really badly, she needs to gain some weight to fill out her wrinkled face. bette midler played her mother in it and she looked younger than helen.

"pathology"

I told my mom it was going to be shit but she rented it anyways. I only watched 10 minutes. utter shit.

I went and saw "Sukiyaki Western Django"...what a glorious bloody mess of a movie that was...Tarantino's brief role is so apporpriate as a warning of what is about to come, combines 1100 feudal Japan with classic spaghetti western themes so you kinda end up a mish mash of "Fistful of Dollars",meets "Yojimbo" meets every blood spurting, limb losing flick you've ever seen...and yes I know there were no handguns in 1100...stupid and fun,my girl HATED it...

I watched "Goya's Ghost" last night...if this movie had been filmed with all Spanish actors in Spanish not just,Javier Bardem it might have been a real winner...they obviously had alot of clout filming around Madrid including the Royal Palace...anyway's I sat through it because of Goya and the fact that I'm generally a sucker for movies about artists...by the way alot of people expected the Spanish Inquisition...

C+

hmmmm movies about artists I liked:

I Shot Andy Warhol
Surviving Picasso
Pollock
My Left Foot (Christy Brown)
Factory Girl (Warhol kinda)
Basquiat
Lust for Life (Van Gogh)
The Agony and the Ecstasy (Michelangelo)

Baby Mama. I laughed a lot, but I wouldn't say it was a good movie. it reminded me of a 90's rom com. the editing was kinda weird. I liked all the characters for the most part, but it seemed disjointed. if I didn't already like the actors playing the parts, I probably would've hated it.

I think Kirshner directed one of the Bond movies, too.

Is Robocop 2 any good? I remembered thinking it was so-so when it came out, but, damn, do people slag on that.

Frank Miller wrote it, too, I believe.

Miller wrote it, but his script was so cut up and edited by Kershner, and it was nothing like he wrote it.

Despite that, it was a pretty good movie. Far too slow in the middle, though, and it tries to make up for that by rushing through the end.

Way better than that sub-made-for-TV crap called Robocop 3.

It's pretty good...but not what I was expecting. The trailers bill it as some kind of laugh-a-minute riot, but its not...it is funny...but not that funny. Or its not as funny as it thinks it is....but it's still good. Brad Pitt, also, isn't as funny in this as he or the Coen's think. Again, he's good...but you get the impression they think it's funnier than it really is.

Still, I enjoyed it.

Hancock was pretty good up until the fucked up ending. It felt like the choices the main characters made had very little emotional weight to them. To me, the reveal of the circumstances (or what they are fated to do?) felt rushed and therefore we got what we got. Did that make sense? Uh, I'm trying really hard not to spoil this.

WANTED is fucking badass all the way though. It would have been cool to see this in theaters but I'm looking forward to watching this again.

so two weeks ago i started my new job at a cinema in bristol. well, most of our energy is put towards the cinema but it's really a 'digital media centre' that has lots of other different faces: a cafe/bar, research and development into mobile technology, social and pervasive gaming, toys, youth media programmes, weird digital.. strangeness.. and stuff. ugh, it's a huge machine.

anyhiz, part of the sweet deal is that all employees get 2 free cinema tickets a week. the cinema shows mostly independent films so it's all the sort of regular indie 'art' jive plus the occasional documentary/festival/season/whatevs. for my role though i get sent to preview screenings organised by the independent cinema office before films comes out (wahoo!) and have to get the distributors to send us screeners so critics can view the films blah blah/arrange press shows/get freebies so we can have competitions yadda yadda. so all in all i should be watching a shitload of films so i can (apparently) do my job better.

so what have i done during my first fortnight here instead of taking advantage of my workplace's sweet deal?

went to the brash new cinema de lux and saw quantum of solace! fuck yeah!

well. i'll make the inevitable comparison to casino royale and say that i preferred casino royale. it was much more raw. daniel craig is fantastic though and mathieu almeric is suitably psychopathic. btw, is it just me or does anyone find he has the blackest of black eyes? he just looks like he was born to play a bad guy. i think a big part of why i enjoyed casino royale a lot more was because eva greene wasn't just a piece of eye candy, she had a good storyline and an involved part to play. the girls here are just meh. but. bond is bond and all the bond-y things you all expect are there.

well. there certainly was a lot of piss and shit and blood, that's for sure. it was stunning. i don't really know what else to add. you can tell it is directed by an artist and co-written by a playwright (the long priest/sands scene) this would normally be a warning sign if i had just read it in a magazine, but nah. it's not pretentious like that.

one of my favourite scenes was when one of the riot police was crying and it was juxtaposed with bobby lying on the ground all bloodied - and he looked almost post-orgasmic.

when.. hrm, can't give it away to people who have not seen it, but that bit with the daisies? totally unexpected. i said "what the fuck!" out loud in the cinema.

i also liked it when one of the guards was mopping up all that piss. i felt almost scared as it was coming towards 'me' - urgghhh.

Did you watch the "Sling Blade" short with Molly Ringwald?

Anyway -- Sling Blade. It'd be interesting to see Billy Bob's original cut. Harvey chopped out about 30 minutes, from what I understand.

All the Pretty Horses never got a fair shake, either. I'd love to see the full version with the Lanois score and all. A few years back,
Damon said it was still the best movie he'd ever been in.

Netflix on occasion gets studios to pree copies specifically for them, which sometimes gets weird. Now and again, several copies of a
movie from Netflix won't play for me, but I go to the store and rent a copy which has an altogether different label and it's fine.

Its OK, not great. It was interesting enough in a historical sense, but it failed to explain the character's motivation, most of them were pretty much 2-dimensional charactures.

It has an overt corporate look that seemed surreal and sickening when you think about the intended audience. At what point do the producers of that sort of film have any shame?

^Network does have some drag time in it but as mentioned it's totally prophetic and so damned far ahead of it’s time…especially if you have any interest in media manipulation and such…the deterioration of Peter Finch’s character is stunning…it has this amazing visual texture to it and the split screen stuff is so great…I don't think I've seen the special version, give a run,I say!

ha.

i went to a marketing event hosted by disney recently (i'm from an indie cinema and though we don't show many of their films - them being for da big bucks an all - they really want to court us. plus, because they have lots of money they put on a good show and you get goodie bags yeeeahhh) and they are, unsurprisingly, slick as fuck.

they said that pixar movies (which they obviously promote too) are really difficult to find that obvious marketing angle that maybe other disney products have, and they specifically mentioned wall-e. no star voices, heck, no voices at all - weird robot.. thing. green.. message.. somewhere.

their new movie, up, looks great (saw a few scenes there) but again, no idea what the hook will be.

they found the time to have some sly digs at dreamworks, ha!

neglecting the marketing side, at said event i saw a really long scene from doubt and it looked pretty bad. nothing to get excited about, kids. up on the other hand...

Ok so this isn't the LAST film i saw(that was Elf last night-bloody great i love Will Ferrel!) but i just remembered i saw probably the worst film i ever saw a few wekks ago. Don't remember what it was called but it was about spiders and some trekkers getting messd up and organ trading. And there were a whole shit load of big spiders in it and i'm guessing that's where the budget went coz the acting and "special" effects and shit were so bad it was funny. And yet i had to watch it right through to see what happened-so to save anyone else here's the spoiler-there were so many spiders so the baddies could harvest the organs from the victims of spider bites coz the venom stopped them going bad so quick.
Ta-da! now you never need to sit through it-i still don't know what it was called tho-Bad spider movie

“The Hoax” it was interesting…Gere was impressive and I always’s like Alfred Molina…it’s belongs to a certain sub-genre of films…how would you say?...based on historical characters and or events in which the “facts” are often contested or accounted diferentially and an element of foul play or crime exists…you know like:

“Hollywoodland”
“Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”
“Auto Focus”
“The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper”
“Assassination of Richard Nixon”

Or even “Catch Me If You Can” fits… which I didn’t really dig but works into whateva you call this genre….

C+

and I watched "Step Brothers" which had me laughing a few times which means alot...stoopid fun eggnog watch...

B-

and I re-watched "Tenacious D: and the Pick of Destiny" which I think you either get it and love it or don't and hate it...I think if you were'nt born between 1970 and 1980 this movie would suck for you...I'm somewhere inbetween...

C+

And I watched "Burn After Reading" which I was really let down by...it had it's moments but too few too far apart...slay me,but it's not a whole lot more entertaining than "Ladykillers" and nowhere near as fine as "Oh Brother" on my Coen comic slide scale...

the reader.

ah, it looked so good on paper! alas! oh dear. i read the guardian's review (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2009/jan/02/the-reader-kate-winslet-film) today (one star!) and was like 'oh, tit. that sounds bad. surely not? what say you, our head of programming?' so i talked to him and he said that while he agreed with everything the review said he would have rated (he hates the star system) it three or even four stars. the performances, technical stuff, etc are good, yes, i can't fault that, but eh, even kate winslet playing it tone-perfect can't help it. we're playing che part 1 and far north too tonight. should have seen che :(

anyway. yeah. this was a bit boring. it wasn't as erotic or as dramatic as it could have been at all. my colleague said people were crying when he saw it. hrmm. i don't think so. without giving it away to other people who may want to see it, its central premise is all well and good but the fact she doesn't admit to, it is so shameful, that she takes the full blame for those crimes? come onnnnn! and the bit with the money and the auschwitz survivor that the guardian mentioned - yes, that was pretty toe curling, too.

one star. okay, kate, i like you. two. but that's it. ralph fiennes is meh, too. don't understand why he is on the poster. the german boy is much better.

(ooh i have some gossip about ralph fiennes from someone who worked with him in theatre and it is lol! i'll save it for a rainy day)

I watched Ghost Town...it had some great Gervais'isms in it...but the whole time I couldn't help but think how much better it may have been if it was set in London intstead of NYC and with an all British cast...and I find Tea Leoni to be terrible actor in everything she's ever done...just don't dig her...

mum and dad.

not because i really wanted to, but it was allocated as homework for a film course i'm doing for work atm - it came out on all platforms at the same time (cinema, dvd, on demand, download etc) and was made for £100k.

not a massive fan of horror films like this but it was nicely done, i guess. not entirely gross out like hostel or saw (although it had a really urrghhh scene involving, erm, 'dad' jerking off into a vagina.. that he had butchered out of his victim) - thinly based on the rose/fred west story. okay for the budget. interested to see where that strand of movies go next.

"that beats any meat injection. that beats any fucking cock in the world"
it's making me feel a bit homesick for glasgow (i know it is set in edinburgh but it was mostly filmed in glasgow) despite the junkies. that pub where begbie smashes the glass - that was my former local! SAFE!

i've realised that i've been in a room in one way or another at various times with five/six (jonny lee miller was there so briefly i can't really count him) of the cast from this film. not because i am some schmoozy high flier but because the people i used to work for/hang with used to get invited to steal free booze from various film events quite often and many of the cast still live in bonnie scotland/have nout else to do (i'm looking at you peter mullan/ewen bremner/kevin mckidd/shirley henderson)

shirley has a really annoying voice.

i used to sort of dislike this film but not so much now. it's smart, moving and funny. i guess i was 13 when it originally came out..

It's SHITE being Scottish! We're the lowest of the low. The scum of the fucking Earth! The most wretched, miserable, servile, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilization. Some hate the English. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are COLONIZED by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to be colonized BY. We're ruled by effete assholes. It's a SHITE state of affairs to be in, Tommy, and ALL the fresh air in the world won't make any fucking difference!

haha. he delivers that so perfectly.

i met the creator of that puppet baby used on the film - the one crawling on the ceiling - at an exhibition and took a picture of the freaky shit but can't be arsed looking through my photobucket to find it. i know i did post it here though. eek. it's scary.

i didn't want it to be turd like everyone was saying but.. yeah. it's turd.

a real bore. i understand parts of it are meant to be parody but it just doesn't know what genre it is.. romance? drama? western? war movie? hey i know, let's make this movie nearly three hours long and chuck em all in! and i think i've been pretty generous with my evaluation of this movie. i would be more than happy to romanticise the fuck out of that country (because i do) but this was just one step toooo far.. some cringey moments in here. mostly nicole kidman and her immobile face/puffy lips, hugh jackman saying "crikey" every ten minutes (seriously. because he is australian. and that's what australians do. scoff) and this really embarassing bit where their characters are getting bizzay and it cuts to these awful, awful vistas of the outback and waterfalls and lovely touristy bits of australia and i was like "huh? need more naked hugh jackman! he's the only thing keeping me in this cinema, man! is this censorship or what? seriously, where's the good old fashioned boning?!"

urrghhh.

david wenham is pretty good though.

pretty shit. not very funny, trades off seth rogen's inherent charm to the point where he becomes annoying, and uses funny accents and racial stereotypes for far too many jokes.

then they shoe-horn in the obligatory "serious" storyline and it feels completely out of place, poorly constructed and poorly timed. the "fight" that starts the winding up of the plot is completely implausible and fake.

smith is a hack. i used to like him, then i realized alot of his other films are no where near as good as i remembered.

The Unborn. I should have been more skeptical about this movie when we were the only people in the theater. The only thing that kept me awake was my sister and our friend screaming at every pop out scary moment. My sister actually screamed during a cut scene that was just a train going by. The Messenger, the story of Jean d'Arc. Not too bad at all but Milla was too manic throughout, like she'd forgotten her meds.

great film, yes, but not as out-of-this-world-you-make-me-want-to-jerk-off amazing as everyone says it is. call me a cynic but it annoyed me a little that the central premise revolved around the million dollar question that we had to believe was broadcast LIVE, ha! yeah right. aaaanyway, casting that aside, it in a lovely enjoyable film with ok performances from the leads and great ones from anil kapoor/irfan khan.

i don't really understand this criticism...is it that unbelievable that a game show would go out live? ok, it doesn't happen much (anymore) but it used to..its not out of this world unbelievable...and, the fact is, it made the drama. If it wasn't going out live it would have sucked half the drama out of that scene. So for the sake of a better ending they did something that was likely not to happen, but is not unrealistic. That's fair enough if you ask me.

yes, it is that unbelievable and unrealistic. of course it would have sucked all the drama out of the scene if it wasn't suggested it was live - which is why it feels shoe-horned in. of course it is an absurd premise. you've giving twelve million rupees away and time for people to go to their laptops, google the answer and win the big bucks. not to mention that if people did this is would no longer be a compelling show for audiences. it is conveniently ignored for the sake of the DRAMA.

but as i said these little details shouldn't really matter in the big picture because it a feel-good crowd pleaser of a film, right? i think the genres just don't fit. it started off as a dickensian romp in the mumbai slums and then it seaged not unseamlessly into this happy ever after romance. the child actors pissed all over the adult ones.
